I recently purchased an 11-87 12 guage and have yet to fire it. We are going on a weekend hunting trip for grouse and ducks. I am taking a 410 for my son for the grouse. I know he will want to shoot for ducks as well but I am a little worried about the recoil of the 11-87 making him gun shy. He is 13 and this will be his first ever time shooting shot guns. I am wondering if I put a good recoil pad if that might help. What are your thoughts and what brand would you recommend.

Should have the R3 recoil pad (pre 2008) and the new one is also out, "supercell" if i recall the name right. They really do work well. Like mentioned above, lighter loads help too, as does, proper mounting of the shotgun. Always glad to see another young ladd getting involved in hunting.
I was 12,and only average size for my age when I started using a 12 gauge 870.My father installed a recoil pad,and I had no problems with 2-3/4" magnum loads.Todays recoil pads are a lot better than they were 35 years ago,and a semi auto will be softer on the shoulder than an 870..
The 11-87 being an autoloader, should be mild in the recoil for a young lad, if you stay with 2-3\4 loads in 1-1\8 oz steel shot.
Hopefully you're son will be so excited about shooting that he wont feel the recoil at all.
I'd be more concerned about the leads necessary on them fast flying ducks,that a young feller may not quite understand yet.
And maybe something other than a 410 for you, as a backup gun when the boy has the 12 ga.(you dont want to be holding a 410 opening day for ducks).
I can assure you of that.
A 12 ga backup gun for you to help encourage you're son to shoot like his daddy does would go a long ways

..Thanks for all the replies guys.I will take all replies into consideration. If I can I will get him out at the range before we head hunting. Also the 410 is for him for grouse, when he is shooting, I will not be that way I can keep an eye on him.
is there anyway you can get to a range or some other suitable place and let him fire off some rounds?? maybe get him prepared for the recoil before he sees a duck also since its a semi auto and if you fire a light load in a 2 3/4 he should'ent mind the recoil especially if hes interested in shooting!
