Recomend A Good Rifle

cosmicheretic, I used a Beretta modified M-14 once and was delighted with it. The only problem with the Norinco is a quality assurance issue. I have seen a very nice .45 commander clone that is just perfect, and one that was made in a different factory that was aboslutely crappy. The US Marines still use M-14's and they are expert riflemen, but I would imagine the Springfield made ones would strip my budget. Not sure I would go semi auto I think the old bolt action is more my speed.
In that case I highly recommend Savage bolt action rifles. The Accutrigger is the finest and safest factory trigger on the market and most of the rifles are sub MOA or better from the factory. They can be had in almost any configuration and many calibers for reasonable prices. I have a Mark II-BTVS .22, a Model 116 fcss 30-06 and a Model 12 VLP .223. Check them out here:

Yes, I looked at a Savage at the Stittsville range on the weekend and was impressed with the trigger. The prices however, are still pushing my budget $200 to $300+ thats a lot of ammo I could be buying ;-) I wish I had a champagne income to match my champagne tatstes but the ole draft beer is calling to me. Used market may supply me with something, I have two shows comming up in April Carp and Perth, I will check out a few local dealers too; but if I dont find anything, i'm going for the Australian Lee Enfield look alike.
if the range is 200-300 dollars might i suggest i purchased a marlin917vs (stainless barrel 17hmr) and it shoots amazingly accurate good to maybe 300meters???wind does play around those 20 grain pills though
Might just stick with a .22 long rifle thanks to Mr Obama banning the export of military surplus ammo. I would imagine that the cheap 7.62 stuff will vanish overnight and wont be able to replace any.... Ah well, still do my Cowboy action stuff....
Marstar are processing my order, and they are including a nice scope and mount in the deal. I bought some Milsurp ammo at the Perth show, I doubt if it is top quality match stuff (1983 RSA manufactured) but it should print on target at 100 to 300 yards. When I get it to the range I will let you know how I like it.
My Australian International Arms Lee Enfield lookalike arrived today. Fast work by Marstar. First Impressions were favourable. The wood is excellent and the feel and balance every bit as good as the old .303 (no surprise) Weight is about the same feel wise. I am not a big fan of the parkerised finish, but the non glare is a bonus in a military rifle. The finish is well applied and even throughout. Markings are clear, and the manual that came with the gun very comprehensive. The sight tool and instructions are very easy to use and you can adjust the foresight for bullet high or low. The bridge is solid and drilled and tapped for the scope that is part of the package with all mounting hardware. So far no complaints with the product at all. I am looking forward to shooting this gun; and will brief you on how it shoots as soon as I can get to the range. I will wait to mount the scope, and just use iron sights for now. My one observation are the two magazines that come with this rifle. You cannot use stripper clips to load them as the bridge is solid and uncut for stripper clips. They appear somewhat flimsy and being boxlike and if they get damaged wont feed well, unlike the old Enfield mags which are much better constructed, they are probably the only drawback quality wise I can see.

I know people are obsessed with the new plastic stocks and modern gadgets, but mount a good scope on this rifle, and you have a nice mid range target grade rifle to play with; one that you could easily sling on your shoulder and hunt deer or moose with. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so off to the range and we shall see what this rifle is capable of performing.

I love it! magazine function is flawless. Rifle is dead on and capable of very fine accuracy (I need a scope, it is a function of age that at 100 yards I can hit the target but I can't see it clearly). Now to mount a scope to cure that problem ;-)
I appreciated all the advice too. I would love to own a Remington 700 or one of the Savage precision rifles but by the time you kit one up its hitting the $1300 to $1500 and my wife (aka the admiral "she who must be obeyed") held me to what I sold my hunting rifle and shotgun +$200... The AIA Lee Enfield came with a scope and mounts, sight tool, and two mags + carrying case and I got 140 rounds of ammo, all for just over a $1000. (she still loves me and bought some extra ammo for me too)
