ok, so i like/dislike the Norc 1911 i've got. i like most of it (i guess the 1911 platform is kinda nice), but would prefer something with nicer sights, a nicer finish, and most importantly NOT in .45ACP anymore - i wanna get one in .40S&W so that it's the same as my Glock and makes it easier for ammo inventory management.

budget? cheaper is better. i dunno, what are my options? STI or Taurus or Springfield or .......? not sure that i want another Norc.

hmm, interesting. mags are a bit steep, but looks worthwhile.

btw, i'm also open to 1911-derived guns, something similar like a brother or close cousing. dunno if a Sig or CZ would be considered close or not really.

actually, i did manage to shoot a mag through a Sig 226 (9mm, no idea which variant, it had an anchor on the slide) and it was nice but a bit "soft" and muted.

STI has some very nice 1911's in .40S&W. If a commander sized gun tickles your fancy, the Ranger II is hard to beat! In a government length gun, you have either the Trojan or the Spartan. Both good guns, with the Spartan being made overseas to STI's specifications and the Trojan being made at STI's shop in Georgetown, Texas using STI's own frame and slide.

IMO, the Spartan is a whole lot of gun for around $800, but the Trojan is well worth the extra $350 or so.

AFAIK, the Spartan isn't avail in .40S&W though - just 9mm and .45ACP - but i wanna stick with .40S&W so that i can use the same rounds as in my Glock (which i like)

but ya, the Ranger II looks quite nice! but i've yet to see or handle an STI piece... a guy at the local club has an SVI race gun that he uses for IPSC, but i'm pretty sure that's far removed from the stuff we're talking about here.

Ah yes... you are indeed correct, the Spartan does not come in .40. I guess just the US made STI's do. I just picked up a Ranger II in 9mm from Armco. It came in yesterday's mail so I haven't had it to the range yet, but I am very impressed with it's overall quality, fit and finish. If it shoots half as good as it looks, It will be a winner for sure.

The Trojan and the Ranger II share the same frame, just the slides, sights and recoil springs are different. And you are correct, the SVI and STI race guns have very little in common with the stock 1911's that both companies produce. But they are representative of the overall quality and attention to detail that both companies are renowned for.

I have handled and shot the Ranger II in .40 and it is indeed a VERY nice gun. If you don't mind the cost you will be hard pressed to find a nicer gun to own and shoot. On the other hand if all you are after is an alternative all metal and hammer fired gun to contrast to your Glock then perhaps a CZ 75 or 85 in .40 would fill the bill?

ok, so what else is there? STI obviously, Para has a double-stack (yeah, i know, questionable stuff) - those are both up in the $1200 range. anything in a $600-$800 range (other than the BUL M-5 which does look interesting and has good reviews)? i can deal with Gov't length - the caliber (.40S&W) is more important to me.

Listen to the STI owners - they know what they're talking about. I have an STI Ranger II .40 S&W and the same pistol in 9mm calibre. I also have an STI Trojan 5" 9mm. Sweet guns to shoot, very accurate and never a FTE or FTF. STI warranties and customer support are second to none.:stirthepot2:

I would have to agree with all of the above.
I've got an STI Trojan in .40.
Well put together,nice and tight,runs flawlessly,a 2.5lb. trigger,excellent
sights. No Series 80 or other internal type safeties.
Accurate pistol for sure.
