This guy wants a 22, also want something like a lever or pump so I can wear a cowboy hat and walk around the woods pretending I'm tough. It will mostly be shot at the range but I kind of want something I can take backpacking with me and rabbit hunting. The mares leg in .22 is looking awesome because its super handy to pack and probably pretty light but I dont know the first thing about rimfires. Any suggestions?

Mares legs are a gimmick... dont bother unless you and your buddies just want to play Steve Mcqueen. Otherwise they are pointless IMHO because you cant shoot them comfortably, and therefore accurately.
Check out the Henry leverguns. they are affordably priced so you don't mind knocking them around a bit, accurate, and really fun to shoot.
Also, why GunNewb? you are stuck with that now no matter how experienced you may become over the years.

Mares Leg is OK if you spend a few bucks and put a real stock on it.
I'm with mikeystew on the general usefulness, as-is.
There is a Browning Trombone on the EE. No baggage attached there (ie: no one will think you were the fool parted from his money) if you are seen in public with it.
Lotsa Marlin 39's out there in as coupla different sizes, from carbine up to adult size rifle, if you shop around.
Bunch of other 'non-bolt' guns out there too, they all have their pluses and minuses, depending on whether you want to hang glass on them, prefer tube or detachable magazines, etc.

After playing with several .22's of all shapes and sizes over the last few years, I have come to appreciate a bolt action. Cheap, reliable, and accurate. Whats not to like.
It's fun to shoot at large targets at close distances, but hitting really small targets at really far distances is just more fun for me now.
If it has to be a pump or lever I would recommend a Marlin 39 like the others above. They are head and shoulders above the similar competition.

x2 ...and in my case, I'm starting to count the .22lr experience in decades. 
For me, semis and levers have come and gone, it's been the bolt actions that have held my attention. That said, the Marlin 39 is a nice lever action. I've never held a Henry lever, but have been curious their pump actions. I ALMOST bought a Taurus 62C pump (Winchester copy, but with a shorter barrel) and I kind of regret not doing it. Would have been a "no-optics" truck gun..kind of the knock-around application I think you're considering.

egads Im bad at forums. this thread is old. Wise men have spoken- Ill listen. Forgetting the mares leg entirely that probably isnt gonna help me shoot my k31 any better. So im cruising the exchange for a marlin or some such thing- Defenitely not the end of the world if I find a nice bolt 22 though. Anyone have any bolt action 22s to recommend? Only thing i dont really want is a semi- too $$.

Lol, you don't move into gunnutz, gunnutz moves into you. Why do you say semi autos are too $$$? Marlins are very affordable, cheaper than bolt actions and way cheaper than lever actions..
In my experience so far, I've owned or do own 4 different lever 22s. My favorite one still is the browning. Just works the best for me. For bolts hands down the cz. Still haven't owned a marlin 39 though but wouldn't turn down a older one if I came across one. My mares legs are fun but that's about it. For pumps I really like the trombone. Cabelas edmonton has a browning bpr in the back for 350 if that floats your boat. Cheers
