So, I find myself wanting a .22 WMR lately. Never owned one, and it would complement my collection of .22's and my .17 HMR.
Any recommendations? I was thinking stainless might be nice - for carrying while hunting grouse and hare in the cold/wet times.

If I was going to buy one right now I would take advantage of the incredible deals available on the discontinued Marlin rimfires right now. They have discontinued most of their rimfire line and replaced it with their XT-22 series. Any old stock left in the channel is going for amazing prices, particularly at Wholesale Sports. For example, the Marlin 983S (.22 WMR tube-fed bolt) is going for $259 (regular $359) and by all accounts it is a fantastic rifle. Stainless steel, micro-groove, laminate, 12-shot tube, gorgeous!

Having said that, I have seen it said many times that .22 WMR will make mince-meat out of rabbit and grouse, so maybe not the best choice.

Having said that, I have been very tempted for weeks to buy this rifle anyway, simply because I think it is one of the best deals I have ever seen, and I don't have a 22WMR yet :)

I have the Savage 93FV (Heavy barrel) in 22WMR , nice ,accurate rifle but the stock is not much to talk about.I swapped it for a Boyds.
That Marlin looks really nice , hope its a liitle better quality than what I have heard lately with the lever actions .

I think the rimfire Marlins are still pretty good. I just bought a 915Y (again, taking advantage of the great deal on a discontinued model) for my two daughters and it is a very, very nice single-shot, bolt-action, youth rifle. The finish and function is excellent. Much smoother action than the Savage Cub that we looked at. One of the only in its class that can take a scope, too...

I do know what you mean about the lever guns, however I lucked into a 1975 336 (.30-30) for $200 and it is buttery smooth :D

If you want a bolt action, the CZ line is pretty nice. I have a 452 Varmint that is very accurate. I also have a Magnum Research semi auto 22 WMR that is real sweet.

If synthetic stock, heavy barrel and 4 & 7 shot magazines suit you better, the 982VS is also on sale. A steal at $239 (reg. $329) IMO (scope not included, methinks).

I love my Ruger K77/22 VMBZ . .22WMR , 24" target barrel , 9 shot rotary mag , beautiful wooden stock and nice looking target grey finish on the barrel . I have shot a roofing nail's head off at 100 meters with hornady 30Gr Vmax

Edit: a little pricier then other mentioned but worth it in my opinion , I have shot my brothers savage in .17 hmr with a synthetic Stock , shot nice but don't like the feel and quality of the stock , bolt or magazine
