I'm looking for a hunting bullet that will be used on deer in my Marlin 30-30. I also take this gun as a backup gun on my moose trip, so the bullet would have to be suitable for moose as well.

Shots will be 125 or less.

I used to use Speer #2041 170gr but I can only find it at one place and they want $48 a box for them.

This is for a tube mag.

I will likely try the FTX bullets with the new powders coming out for them in the future. For now an old fashioned cup and core bullet will meet my needs.

What do you recommend for a reasonably priced hunting bullet in a 30-30?

The bullet that made the 30-30 famous as a hunting cartridge, was/is the 170 grain flat nose, or slightly rounded, with a good chunk of lead exposed.
It sounds like this is the type you are having trouble finding. I have most of a box, I think they are Hornady.
Every loading company loaded similar bullets. In Canada, the most famous was the old CIL, Dominion brand. They sure fed a lot of families on moose and elk meat in the hungry thirties. I haven't checked lately, but I imagine one of the major companies still load them.

Yup - 170gr flat nose is what I was using.

Seen what a 170gr Hornady did to a big cow moose.Penetrated around 2ft and nicely mushroomed. Win 748 /32gr/mag primer/170gr..................Harold

Very good advice. If I remember corectly when using 30-30 before switching to 35 Rem I used the same powder, load, mag primer and 170gr Rem HPCL with deadly result on anything!
