Hi guys,

I'm new to the gun scene. Just bought a glock 17 and am taking my black badge ipsc course.
What holster should I get? I am looking at the fobus paddle holsters. And how many mag pouches do I need? I have 5 mags so should I get one double pouch or two?

I would like to keep this under $100 if possible. Also if you guys can suggest a retailer that would be good too.

I use the cheapest Blackhawk holster option. I think it was about $20 for the holster. I made a drop/offset bracket to make it a little easier to draw from quickly. I'm shooting a single stack 1911, so I can't help with the mag holders.

I have a 5.11 thumb drive. It works well. Great retention. It was 70 bucks. I would recommend a blade tech open top as well. Check 911supply.ca. They are in Calgary. Good to deal with. You can always order directly from blade tech as well.

I'm a HIGHLY budget-oriented shooter. I don't make good coin by any stretch of imagination. Initially, I made the mistake of buying cheap double mag pouches and then I ended up buying DAA pouches anyway. Fortunately, the cheap pouches still see SOME use, but it sure isn't in IPSC. The cheapest holster I'd go with is Bladetech and that runs in the $80 ballpark. A good set of mag pouches and a magnet will run you in the $200 ballpark, plus a belt for $60ish.. All told, you are looking at $350. If you're serious about playing IPSC, you have 2 options:

1) Spend $350 on good gear
2) Spent $450 on good gear and $100 worth of junk gear

Your choice, but my take on your situation is:
-Buy once, cry once
-You don't sound rich enough to be blowing $$$ on junk

That's good advice. I already bought my setup, which was cheap, but I am very new to the sport. I'm ok with learning what I'm doing (how to shoot) and buying better stuff later. I'm just trying to get thorough the Black Badge course and then I'll take it from there.

In the end, you will end up spending money on the right gear if you continue in IPSC in any way. I did the same thing when I started. I bought a cheap belt and a few cheap double mag pouches. I quickly learned why they typically aren't used in IPSC. The only thing I did right was buy a blade tech DOH. There is a big difference between good gear and cheap gear. That being said though, do what you need to. If you can't afford or need it right away then the gear you got will do for the time being.

Either way just remember to be safe and have fun!

When I took my black badge training last December I used an airsoft cr speed holster for my sig P226 from big dragon airsoft ..$20 , they sell cr speed mag pouch as well...

Budget Holster? The Sigtac GK1 Holster is $32.

No one will ever accuse me of being "sensible". Any time I think of cutting back on my toys I smash my thumb with a brass hammer to restore my sanity. Buying less than what I want and expect will be the best has never worked for me.

Double mag pouches usually don't work well but I found an exception. One of my goals is to preserve space on my belt so I want pouches that take the least space while tolerating my clumsy IPSC form.

I recently bought a set of CR Speed pouches and since I needed five actually looked for a way to save a few dollars. The CR Speed doubles can be individually adjusted on their carrier. So I bought three singles to serve as the front three on my belt and then a double that in my case ends up towards the small of my back. The double rides slightly lower but that's OK as the first three will be gone before I need that last two which is less frequently.

I can't recall what the savings were with this scheme but they weren't trivial.Anyway you do it, five CR Speeds or AA's aren't cheap.

I like the CR Speed WM II because it has been flexible for me as I change guns and the bonus is that they are easy on the gun. The only wear on my Custom 1911 is on the trigger guard where it's gripped by the holster. The CR Speeds are double the cost of a BladeTech but if you can use it for more than one gun or avoid buying a new one when you change guns which many of us do, you break even and have one of the better products out there.

I'm sure there are probably some differences between my $20 black hawk and a $90 blade tech, but after I built a new belt bracket out of some scrap aluminum, it works good for me. I found out about the LHS rapid draw and liked the looks of it, but didn't really want to spend the money. Mine isn't as adjustable, but it fits good for me. I will definitely agree that cheaping out and going with double mag holders isn't the best idea. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on them and had just bought the DAA ones right away.

FYI - that's not IPSC legal, the grip of the gun will sit too low. (You could easily mod it to be legal, though)
Maybe you use it for something else, but since the thread is discussing "IPSC use"; I thought you should be aware.
Wouldn't want a surprise and get bounced to Open.
