Hey all.

One step closer to getting set up for reloading. Only took about 3 years up to now. :(

I have a Savage 10FP with a 1 in 10 twist barrel. 308.

Looking for some recomendations in bullets to start reloading. For precision type stuff and long range.

Sierra match kings, burger, nosler? Grain of slug? Looking for a decent place to start.

Try them all. I find 155 gr Nosler's shoot slightly better than 155 SMK's. 155 Berger's and Lapua's use about 2 MOA less elevation than Nosler's and SMK's at 800-1000 yards. I find the Berger's and Lapua's better in the wind at long range, but didn't feel disadvantaged if I am shooting SMK's or Noslers.
With your 1:10 twist you might find 175 SMK's work very well.

I like the Sierra Match 168/175g BTHP, and you most definitly cant go wrong with the Burgers.

And Hodgton Varget, fast burning, not to temperture sensitive. And its what my rifle likes.

175/168 SMK - I love 168 SMK - I just switched to 167 gn Scenars but these are great bullets.

155 SMK if you like speed and wicked BC

I recommend Varget as well.

1:10" twist was designed for 240 grain bullets. The obsession with 1:10 twist barrels in .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO completely baffles me. However the question stands and it is honest.

The 175 SMK has a better BC that the 180, I also found the 178 Amax to be awesome touching the lands.

Agree with what Mike and Obtunded and others said, but I'd lean more to the 175smk over the 178amax - I've found it's a lot easier to get them shooting well, although the amax's shoot great once you get it all worked out.

I went with a 10 Twist on my .308 build because when I did my research - there was no disadvantage to using it but gave me more possibilties in using heavier/longer bullets. I don't know if the bbl will wear any faster then a 12 twist but it really doesn't matter to me as a.308 Win's barrel life is really good to begin with. My Hart bbl shoots 168 gn/155 gn really well and I haven't noticed anything negative yet.

...Running with a far tighter twist than needed increases pressures, furthermore the higher the RPM of the bullet, the greater the effect of any miniscule eccentric flaws in the bullets. The only advantage to a tight twist with light bullets is the ability to use a slow node and maintain accuracy.

The longest heaviest bullets that a 308 can shoot and still make it worth your while are about 200 grains. Most of these only need a 1:12

Thanx for the replies, guys.

My shooting budget is virtually none existatant right now, so I'm looking for a combination that will show reasonable results very early in my process. THis is my first kick at the cat, so I'm hoping to see reasonable results for encouragement rather than crummy results and a poor attitude.

If there is any more, please post away.

Hi Peter hope you are well; I will have to disagree on the Sierra's John was shooting the Bergers in his 1-10, you can find his article over on 6mmbr.

With all these new VLD bullets it has been found that the weight is not as important as the bearing surface. The older designed bullets like the aforementioned Sierra have a shorter bearing surface and require a faster twist the typical 1/12 1/13 to effectively stablize the bullets. Todays bullets are much longer a side by side comparison of 155 Lapua and the 175 Sierra are ALMOST identical and they do extremely well out of the same twist barrels.

I'm not sure of the twist rate on my 40X in 308 win, either 12 or 13, I'm guessing. Anyway it does just fine with 155gr Palma Sierras at 1000 Meters. Bill

I use the 155gr Palma Sierra in my .308. It will shoot .3 MOA if I do my job. 46 grains of varget was the heat for me.
