Recommend a laser bore sighter?

Hey guys,

I have a new .308 rifle that's going to need a new scope mount, it seems. I have basically used up all my windage and elevation just to get it zeroing at 100 metres. In the meantime, I've found I really need a universal bore sighter tool. I called my local shop who, as usual, doesn't have any stock, so I am going to just buy something online. I was hoping some fellow nutz could recommend a decent brand of laser bore sighter. I'd like it to be usable on any kind of gun, ideally, though I really only require .22 and .308 at the moment.

I do know how to find this kind of stuff, but there are so many different options available that I'm hoping to get a few first hand opinions. I don't want to just buy some random cheap thing on ebay and find out it was a waste of time and have to shop again.

Any suggestions?

I'ved tried a couple of these, and the only one that I actually use now is one made by SightMark. I forget the price (not expensive, though), but it's functioned perfectly for several years now. I am guilty of playing musical scopes with my rifles now and then, so I get a fair bit of use out of it. By mounting it on a rifle/scope that is sighted in and leaving it in place while I switch scopes, I can then get the new scope sighted in virtually perfectly, well within 1MOA of the original zero, before firing a shot. The only time this fails slightly is if I am also changing the height of the rings being used, but even then it is very close.

This unit adheres magnetically to the muzzle, and does not project into the line of sight, so you must be careful to ensure it's removed before shooting. I'm sure that it won't survive jumping out of a plane into an active volcano, and so will be flamed by the high-speed/low-drag ninja wannabes that eat MRE's for breakfast and use milspec toilet paper, but the thing works well for a good price and is always with me on hunting trips in case I want a useful zero check without firing a round. I got mine at Williams' Arms, and I think I've seen them around other sites/places as well. I hope this helps.

Edited to add: I took it with me to Africa on a hunt. My PH was so impressed with it (reloading is illegal in his area, so anything that saves wasted ammo is useful to him) that I left it with him and got another when I got home. For me to buy another identical unit, instead of trying something different, means that I really, really like this little gizmo!

Bushnell what I use.

Every gun store carries it pretty much I've found.

The gun store in my city is reminiscent of the general store in the film "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", in that almost every single time I go in there with cash in hand to buy something, they don't have it, but claim to be able to bring it in, but can NEVER tell you how long it will take, and until you learn better than to even give them a chance, they will just write your name down on a piece of paper and forget about you.

Or maybe my requests are unreasonably uncommon and I should be prepared to 2+ weeks to get rare items such as: CCI mini-mag ammo, American Eagle 9mm ammo, laser boresighters, 22LR snap caps, 308 dummy rounds, deburring tools, case gages, Uncle Mike's holsters, etc, etc, etc.

I don't even bother going there anymore. I call on the off-chance that they have it, but as was the case again this weekend, they didn't.

I will probably look for that Bushnell model online. I've had good experience with their products and availability is always great.

Thanks for the tips, guys.
