Hello all, My better half is in the market for a 12 gauge semi to shoot clays with. She wants the semi for the reduced recoil yet wants something small and light as she is a small woman. She has her mind set on these points. Was just wondering if you all had a few makes/models in mind. She absolutely will not purchase without handling it prior to purchase so recommending one that has to be ordered online is probably out of the question. She is very particular about the feel, weight, length, etc.

Thanks.

Doesn't Remington make a small frame 1100 in 12G? Caesar Guerini makes the Syren line of sporting guns for women. I think they offer a semi auto. A bit pricey. I know its not a semi but I shoot trap with a tiny woman who shoots a BT99 Micro and she loves it. My wife shoot an Ithaca 900 which seems to be built a bit small. Too small for me anyway.

I just bought my girlfriend a Remington V3 for Christmas. It fits her well.

Her second choice was the Franchi 20ga mentioned above, but the V3 was on sale for 50% off during the reliable gun sale.

There is the Remington 1100 or the Weatherby SA-08 or any other number of guns.
Best take her shopping and fit the ones mentioned if they are in your local area.
better yet, head to a Shotgun Club and see if any of the ladies will let her shoulder their guns.
Nothing like a Hen Party doing its thing ;)

Bought my wife a Beretta A200 decades ago when it was current production. She dumped me over 15 years ago, but still has the Beretta. Not sure where that information should lead you.

You'll want a gas-operated semi auto, and not an inertia-recoil operated gun, if you can find one a long-recoil gun, like the ORIGINAL Browning A-5 is also an option.

Im not sure I fully understand why one should avoid an inertia gun, yet look for a long recoil gun. The long recoil guns have more recoil then an inertia gun. Seems like a bizarre recommendation.....or am I missing something?

Browning Silver. My wife shoots my 20 gauge. Make sure she shoulders the full size and micro version. The micro was too short on her.

She likes the O/U the best. We have gone to Cabelas and Wholesale to shoulder different shotguns. I'll buy one when she figures out which one she wants. Strangely she claims the most expensive is the one that fits the best...............

I find my Ithaca 900 20g long recoil has minimal recoil, my petite wife says it is the only gun I cannot sell because she likes to shoot it. My 12g 900 is similar - really soft to shoot compared to a pump or O/U. My 20g A5 thumps a lot harder than both my Ithaca and Breda.

The recoil on my Franchi's is a lot stronger than what you would feel on an inertia gun. Not enough to bother me, but certainly enough to almost floor my GF when she tried it. Not a 12g gun I would recommend for anyone recoil sensitive

What you want is a gas-operated, semi-automatic which reduces felt recoil. It doesn't reduce the actual recoil but spreads the impulse out over a few micro seconds making it more of a push than a punch. I second the recommendation of the Beretta A400 RL with the kick-off. A lightly-used 391 Parallel Target RL would be a good choice too as would the Browning Silver Micro.

Pay attention to balance and weight as well. Female shooters are often concerned about recoil but ignore gun weight. If they do not have sufficient upper body it may lead to a poor stance which will serve to increase felt recoil.

Ignore the advice on any inertia or recoil gun both long or short. Tacticool guns like the Benelli M4 are also best avoided. She's going to shoot clays not breach doors in Fallujah.

Thank you everyone for the advice. She currently shoots a Mossberg Maverick 88 Youth 20g pump action and doesnt have any troubles. Her main issue is with the weight of the shotgun as it tends to tip her forward and put her off balance. She was more afraid of the recoil than anything. She managed to get a few shots off with my Berterra A400 Xtreme Unico before the weight started tipping her forward too much to attempt any more and was surprised at how little recoil she felt. She can not manage my O/U at all.

It's a conundrum because the lighter a gun gets the more it will recoil but a heavier gun may lead to stance issues leading to more felt recoil. If gun weight is a concern then the Beretta A400 in 20 gauge with a Kick-Off would be worth considering. The gun I use when introducing women to the shooting sports is a Beretta 391 Sporting in 20 gauge and I've had no complaints about either weight or recoil.

My Ithaca 20g 900 is only 5.8lbs - and it feels light when you swing it. Not sure how much lighter you can get in a semi as I do not know other models' weights for comparison.
