The rifle is my newly acquired Remington M700 .300 H&H. :)

The rifle already has a 1 pc Leupold base so I will buy the Leupy rings to fit.

I am thinking about a fixed power scope, like the Weaver K6. Any thoughts? I am wondering if anyone out there uses one of these 6X scopes and whether or not they think one would be appropriate here.

The next obvious option is a variable from Bushnell, Weaver, Leupold etc...

Also does anyone have experience with Nikon scopes?

I will primarily use the rifle for deer hunting.

Hey Demonical...

Here is my take on the scope issues... More important than "what" scope you choose, is "what" power range of scope you choose..

I used to hunt with a 2-7x32 Elite... Loved it and never felt underpowered...

I changed to a 3-9x50 Elite when I bought another gun... Loved it but did notice that close objects were "harder" to get into the scope at times...

I again changed to a differend scope on my "accurate" rifle setup... A 4-16 power scope and last fall I shot a 7 point whitetail with it... I had considerably more trouble getting that deer in the crosshairs as he was only about 40 meters away...

So, that 6 power your looking at "might" be a little powerful for the close shots you might encounter...

Cheers
Jay

Sounds like a great plains rifle - and should probably be glassed accordingly. I like the idea of the Weaver K-6 a traditional scope on a traditional rifle. A close shot at 6X isn't impossible - although the field of view might be a little tight.

In a variable I guess I'd look at a 2-8X or a 3.5-10X. I don't think there is much benefit in going more than 10X on a big game rifle. If this rifle was going to double as a long range coyote rig, then perhaps a 4-12X, or even a 4.5-14X but I don't really care for the 6.5-20X on a hunting rifle.

Two variables I am considering are the Weaver Grand Slam 3-10X and the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9X. Both are in the $350 range.

I have never hunted with a fixed power scope. I think the Weaver 6X would be kinda different but it is a classic scope.

hard to go wrong with a Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm matte / duplex for the type of hunting you'll be doing with that 300

Demonical,
My Winny Super Express in 375 wore the Leupy QR two piece rings and a Leupold 6x42mm, M8 scope. It was a nice combo. Had I to do it again, it would be the 2.5-8 vx-III. It was my favorite on the 338-06, with lots of eye relief and it suit most any situation you come across.
The 6x Leupy just barely touched my eyebrow more than a couple times. Be sure to keep the eye relif in mind!
Hope this helps,
Noel

Go with the Elite out of those 2. That Rainguard is incredible.

I had one of the newer (bought it 2 years ago) Weaver 4x fixed. It was quite good actualy. I put it on Bob's 30-30 so he could have a good scope for hunting. Mine was one of the older/ newer ones, the ones with the crest on the side. The current ones are not quite as nice.

I also have a Weaver 2x10x 38 I don't realy recomend it because of it's narrow field of view.

If you want a nice fixed power you could also go with one of the Leupold fixed. I have not checked out the newest version of these but my M8 -6x36 and 6X42 are some of the best HUNTING scopes I own.

X3!! Most of my pure hunting rigs now wear 6x42 Leupolds, about 3 others have 6x36 Leupolds. The former is one of the finest pieces of glass I have ever used, and there is no problem until you are inside 25 yards on game. I do have a 2.5-8 VXIII on a 6mm Remington, and a 3.5-10 VXIII on my 7mm Mag, but the fixed powers are much more attractive to me. They are rugged and light, and that 42mm Objective gathers plenty of light, especially since the new ones are MCIV. My 30-338 has a 6x42 on it, and I consider that a real dandy combination. Your 300 H&H would be similar. Occasionally you can pick up a solid used Leupy 6x for decent $$. Regards, Eagleye

Boys I went in to check out the new Stoney Creek Outfitting store in Whitecourt. They had a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40 for $275. It is $250 at Wholesale Sports. I cannot drive to Edmonton or buy it over the phone from their Calgary mail order store for any less, so I bought it! :)

My .270 Sendero has a 2.5-10X40 Elite 4200 on it. I might swap the scopes and mount the 3-9X on the .270 and put the 2.5-10X onto the .300 H&H (just because the Elite 4200 will likely absorb recoil of the .300 H&H a bit better).
