Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 is relatively inexpensive. 120ish on the A~Z site. If you're hunting 1st and last light, you're going to want something that gathers light.
I've moved on from them though to a 50mm bell, eyes are getting tired.

I recently taught an 8 yr old to shoot with a CZ Scout 22 and a red dot scope. After a bit of tuition and working out she was left eye dominant she was able to get a very nice 5 shot group that was under 2", which resulted in her first kill a week or 2 later when she dropped a jackrabbit at about 50 metres. That rifle was so much fun, I decided to see what it was capable of, and put 10 shots within 3" at a measured 100 metres using the red dot scope. They are fast, they are easy, and more than capable out to 100 - I'd go for a half decent red dot myself, call it done.

I need to break down and get a Leopold 1-4x too....currently I my favorite scope is a 2-7x35 vortex which was inexpensive but has performed very well. I'm game to go lighter and don't really need anything over 4 power where I hunt.

nice Jay!!! such a dreamy rifle, so awesome too see it fullfilling those dreams of some!

mate il vote for the 2-7x33 leupold... good for end of the barrel and 400meters, not that the 30-30 needs that but nice view at 200m on 7x, mine now sits on my Ruger 1 303.. its ideal.

Leupold 1-4 unless you want to spend the extra on Leupold 1.5-5

You will want the field of view on the lower magnification for up close shots, not sure about where you are but in Eastern Ontario 90% of my deer were within 20-50 yards.
Even at 5 power with 20mm Objective your exit pupil is 4mm that's plenty of light coming through.

I am looking to Scope a Mossberg 464, to use it for hunting up to 100 yds.

Also, I'd like to have a Tac Scope or Red Dot for short range target fun.

What is good, and economical ?

I have this on my Mossberg 464 SPX, and a Votex Venom RDO 6 MOA
