recommend a scout scope

I was mounting scopes forward of the action before it was popular. Wasn’t any so called scout scopes around. To this day I still use pistol scopes. I use the same scopes on my Contender pistols shooting over the same distance and can’t see any difference in performance due to what’s under the scope. The two scopes I like are 2to 8 power Burris and a Bushnel. Bushnel has a smaller field of view but still and excellent scope.

There's a big difference in eye relief because we are discussing scout scopes (rifle) and pistol scopes often have different eye relief requirements.
That's why we say Extended Eye Relief or Intermediate Eye Relief in scope categories.
Variable power pistol scopes are kind of a burden mounted on a carbine/rifle/shotgun.
Because as you crank up power the need to get extremely close to the ocular bell puts your head too close to the optic upon discharge.
Notice Leupold never made a variable power scout scope. Only low power fixed magnification.

if you're dead set on a scout scope, the one I preferred out of the nikon, leupold, vortex and burris was the burris. I tried the 2-7 and 2.5. In reality the 2-7 stayed on 2 the huge majority of the time.
That being said, "regular" scopes have come a long way and I've now sold off all my scout scopes in favor of low power variable optics (LPVOs) or similar scopes with close to 1x (say 1.75 and below). If you get one with an illuminated reticle it's similar to a red dot. The fact that scout scopes are mounted forward reduces the field of view, and the position of the sun can interfere with reticle visiblity. It's just as easy to acquire a target and shoot with both eyes open with a good LPVO. Beyond 3-3.5x I felt it wasn't intuitive to use a scout scope with both eyes open. Maybe it's not an issue with other users.

i may have to go to a red dot, i need at least 9" eye relief and the only thing i can get is a vortex for a scope

I have both the Leupold 2.5 and the Burris 2.75 and I much prefer the Burris. International Shooting Supplies has one in stock.

Bushnell made a 2-6x Scout scope in their Trophy line with either a 32mm or 36mm objective lens. But they also made a pistol scope in the Trophy line that was 2-6x the same. I don't remember what the eye relief was for either and I always suspected they were the same scope labelled differently. More recently they offered a 2-7x36mm Scout model in the Trophy line with 8" eye relief. I have one but haven't installed it yet. It's marked Made in Korea.

Weaver had a scout scope in their made in Japan Classic line, which like all Weaver scopes isn't made anymore. Good glass, well built scopes. If you find one second hand it may be worth looking at. The K4 Scout is 4x28mm with 50yard parallax, (hmmm, what a coincidence, they also did rimfire 4x28mm with 50 yard parallax, the Classic R4.)

Interested to hear from someone that has both. Why is that you prefer the Burris? Pros and cons of both models?

I’m leaning towards the Leupold (if I can find one) for the main reason that I can get the reticle changed. I want a German #1 reticle. That used to be an option from the factory.

The thing I like the most about the Burris is the size. It's very compact and I find it just suits me better. It's simply personal preference. I know the Leupold is very popular and rightly so as it's an excellent scope but I don't really like the size of it and find the reticle on the Burris sharper to my eye.
As far as cons, for me there are none with the Burris.
I believe the 2.5 Leupold has been discontinued but there might be the odd one around.

Lots of Burris 2-7's out there and I picked one up for my 454.

I looked through one but haven't mounted it or shot it yet.

Leupold actually did make a VX-scout but it was nowhere near as ubiquitous and popular as the FX-II 2.5 because as most have said, anything about 2.5x (to maybe 3 x) is not really convenient or useful. So one ends up sticking it on ~2.5 anyway (with the expense of higher cost, longer and heavier size).

I have the newer offering 2-7x36mm Trophy scout scope. So far so good. Eye relief and clarity is good for the price point. Availability seemed pretty decent in Canada.

I’ve had
Leupold m8 in 1.4? And 2x. Sks, bolt gun
Leupold fxII 308
Burris 2-7 currently have a pair on rimfires
Aim 2-7 survived 2k rounds on a mosin
Vortex red dot/ magnifier. Didn’t work for me. Astigmatism

The little m8 leupolds are probably my favorite. Very forgiving eyebox, tough as nails, compact and very light.
