I'm new at Black Powder use in cartridge guns and would like to buy a powder measure to be used solely for BP. Can anyone recommend one and give some personal experience with it. I would be loading rifle rounds like the .45-70, .50-70, and .577 Snider.

Thanks,

i use the Lyman 55 Black Powder measure and it works great, all the internals are made of materials that will not spark(like brass). i don't use the drop tubes supplied and would not pay extra for them, i drop tube in a separate step using a 4' length of copper tubing.

outdoors I use one of my cases mark it so I use the same one, then fill it full of the black stuff and drop tube it into a primed and sized case, Wad, slight compression, seat bullet and crimp O SO slightly if you want and you should be ready to go.

We have used a regular Lee all plastic, rotary powder measure. It measures OK with FFFg BUT take a lot of care that there is no possibility of a static spark. Actually we don't use it in the winter when the house is dry.
