my original thought was a guide gun. but now im not sure. Im open to all suggestions, doesnt have to be a lever.

I owned a pre Remington Marlin 1895gbl and put a xs ghost ring sight on it sold it to one of my best friends because he was in love with it, replaced it with a Rossi Rio Grande with a Skinner sight. The Rossi is about a pound lighter and I am hard pressed to pick one over the other. They were both fun to shoot but the Rossi is nicer to carry.

I guess it depends what you want. I've a Pedersoli Sharps that I have a blast with, an old 86 Winchester with the nicest action, and I was leaning heavy towards a Ruger No1 in it before a nice one in 30-06 caught me. I had a cheapy Italian Sharps carbine once that was fun, but was a bit crudely made.

It's a cartridge with character

The 1885 highwall is truly a fine rifle....the new Winchester/Miroku....I'm talking. An original 1886 ELW in 45-70 is also a wonderful lever or the new repro by Win/Miroku is also very well made. I have a Shilo Sharps that is also very well made in the old 1874 Sharps design. Ruger #1 is a very strong action and is available in 45-70 if you're looking to shoot a short case 458 mag (almost). All depends on your preference. I've also seen several custom bolt 45-70s built on Siamese Mauser.

I have a Browning 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine and new Win 1886 Short Rifle in 45-70 and they're both awesome rifles. Safe queens for sure.

I have a Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 but my 22" barreled T/C Contender carbine is my favorite 45-70 .

The Browning model 71 is a really nice hunting rifle. It's half length mag helps balance the gun, the curved grip on the stock makes working the lever more of a comfort, and the shotgun style butt plate shape of the stock really makes a big difference when bringing the gun to your shoulder (mostly for dogging big game in the bush or sitting on stand for a close running shot).

Plus Browning really does a great job on their fit and finish, nice bluing and wood, etc.
