I've got a Savage 11 in .308 that came with a weaver base. I'm going to use it mainly for deer and don't plan on shooting further than 500 yards.

I'll take the weaver base off if I have to, and probably do.

Cost < $500, new or used.

What do you guys think?

A good lower priced option is a Redfield , they are made by Leupold now and have a lifetime warranty as well.
I have a Redfield Revenge in 4-12 x 40 and really like it, nice and clear.

I am a fan of burris for the rings to mount the scope. I have a bushnell elite on my savage model 16 .308, it's only 3-9, so you may want something a bit stronger for out to 500 yards, but i've been using it for several years now without any problems

I'm liking what your throwing down. I'm a big believer in Burris too. I like the older B&L elites (3000 / 4000) over the new 3200 & 4200 runs. Watch the EE, some real finds materialize there.

Thanks for all the great suggestions - I've heard good things about the Burris rings - I'll take a close look at them with Zeiss and Redfield.

Leupold for the scope, could go Redfield, if ya wanna, Leupold bases, possibley Weaver bases, depending on the application, Leupold rings, could go Burris rings, if ya wanna. Leave them dam Weaver rings on the shelf for the penny pinchers, they are out there in hords, they work just dam fine for them guys! And they make them dudes happy for some reason, maybe a McPukes burger on the way home with the peanuts in savings in the price?

A Leupold scope in the 2.5-8X class would be my choice. A pic rail gives you the most latitude for positioning the scope and rings for optimum eye relief, but whether or not you could get this scope, a rail, and decent rings all for <$500 is questionable.

EGW rings and Base. I run EGW on all my riffles and it has never failed me...

As for scope. Redfeild or Nikon are in that price range I own both and they are great budget scopes.

I hope you`re right, I just got an EGW rail for my 3 screw M-7, but I haven`t had the opportunity to use it yet. My intention is to use my PM II on both my custom .308 target gun and my .243 varmint gun.
