Been thinking about a semi for this year's varmint hunting. I currently use a 13lbs heavy barrel bolt gun and want to try something different. 10 lbs or less scoped, obviously non restricted, 2 MOA will do and $2k or less (used us fine). I don't care if it uses AR mags or not, 5 rds will be just fine for me.

What are my best options and what do you guys like?

Ruger Mini 14 Target?

Legally you can't have more than 5 rounds in a Semi Auto Centerfire.

EXTREMELY WRONG, You can have up to 10 rounds in a semi auto centerfire rifle if you have 10 round "pistol" magazines.

As far as semi auto .223's go most of that game is dominated by the Black & Green rifle family.

Mini-14 Target is a decent rifle and I've seen them shoot very well in person.

Personally I'd say go for a Benelli MR1, just over $2000 new but a use done would be within your window and they are extremely well performing rifles.

Scroll down below the XCR's and there are two listed here for example.

I handled the Mini Target, found it awkwardly unbalanced. LAR mags hold 10 and legal but that doesn'take a deciding factor for me.

I'll bet you're referring to the laminate stock version. The Target model with the Hogue stock has a completely different and better feel, IMHO. It's one of my favourite coyote rifles, will beat 1MOA with handloads and best of all: does 1.25MOA with several cheap factory loads.

You may also find that removing the bulbous harmonic dampener gizmo from the muzzle lightens the gun, improves the balance, and has little or no effect on practical accuracy. I took mine off, and eventually had the barrel chopped off to just over 18.5 inches. Shoots like a champ. If you insist on "controlling barrel harmonics", you can slip on a $10 Limbsaver rubber donut and play with it to your heart's content.

Used XCR-L,I sold a keymod last year for $1800. There are still some around for under $2000
I just got another keymod HB,it weighs 8lbs,bare bones. And it's capable of MOA with hand loads image.jpg

Yes it was one of the laminate stocked models. Did not like it at all.

Never seen a MR1 in person, might have to try and find a local shop with one so I can have a look.

I have had XCR's before, didn't mind them at all but found them to be a tad heavy.

more like $700 after tax. I see there are some used ones hovering around 2100 lately. not sure how you would shoot one off shooting sticks or a large bipod? Any experience yote hunting with one?
