Recommend my a good .303 hunting bullet.

So,
Just spent more money then I wanted to on some .303 brit hunting ammo (Win. 180g sp)

So, since I have a fairly comfortable stash of brass I would like to re-load some hunting ammo for next season.

I was thinking of the Barnes TSX, lead free is always a good thing for meat and they look pretty good. they come in 150g in the .311 diameter.

Any other bullets you would recommend for a nice clean hunt?

I find the #1 and #4 temperamental about what bullet they shoot well with. So buy a box of Barnes and test them before getting carried away. That bullet would be good if it works in your rifle.

Unless your hunting is long range, the Hornady 180gr RN seems to work well in all rifles. It is short and has a flat base.

But it does not cycle through a Moisin Nagant, even though it shoots accurately in one.
 
each of my five Enfields have their own mind when it comes to bullet/charge.

My favorite Sporter I use for hunting is a No4 two groove barrel. I run Hornaday's 174grn RN in .312 for just about everything, same round in my jungle carbine.... not soo good.

if you can slug your barrel as .303's are anything but consistent and see where your at. I know everyone says every rifle is different witch is very true to a point but Enfields are the truth of that beyond most
 
OP, you are late! This is a thing you play with in the spring. Not late summer. This way, your rounds are all worked up and you have found the one that works and fired a hundred of them to confirm you, your rifle, and thebullet can all work together. Now you will have to rush and miss the enjoyment of working up that combination. Good luck, though.

On the bright side, it's a lit easier to work up a load that shoots minute of meat than moa :)
 
The old CIL Dominion loaded with the 174 grain Kling Kor soft point had a great reputation for killing moose, as did the Dominion 215 grain KK soft point.
Those two bullets likely accounted for more moose shot with the 303 British, than all other bullets in the 303 combined.
Similar 174 grain bullets are still available. What more do you need?
 
I've had a number of 303's, starting with my 1st big game rifle which was a 'Simpon-Sears' sporterized special and I'm presently on my 4th 'Jungle Carbine'.

I've also cranked out reloads for a few friends and one of the bullets that has consistently given some of the better results on game and noticeably better results on paper is the Hornady 174gr RN. Another that while I haven't used it on game, also shows great results on paper is the 215gr Woodleigh. Both of these bullets are 0.312" in diameter whereas most other available are 0.310" or 0.311" so for me, the ticket is 0.312" bullets. Incidently, Hornady puts out two more bullets of this diameter, a 150gr SP and a 174gr BT-FMJ.
 
I have had good luck with the 180 grn Sierra Pro Hunters (flat base, spitzer). As others have noted, the Hornadys are .312 and the Sierra's .311; some rifles prefer one to the other. Steve Redgwell at 303british.com used to have heavy weight bullets at various diameters.
 
I feel I need to state again every .303 is different, barrels were manufactured from .3105 right out to .3170 like the odd P14. also from two groove up to five groove and born with different groove depths on top of that.

try everything and see what yours likes everyone here will have conflicting arguments and they are all right due to this fact.

I personally thought it was only a difference between No1s,No4s,No5s blah blah but nope after handloading for my own they each have their own recipe

On the Speer bullet display board in my reloading room, that bullet is on it. It was a 175gr, 0.313" that I believe had been made for the 7.65x53mm Mauser (Argentine). Some time back after some promising results using cast bullets sized to 0.313", I contacted Speer to see if there was any possibility of locating some. Nil. Inquiries to a number of retail outlets yeilded the same results.
