As the gun was only $539. I want to keep the cost of the scope below that price.
Not sure what I should spend. I am looking for a scope that has a sweet spot beyond AR/AK range. My only rule is no batteries.
What makes a good scope? I don't have a lot of experience in this area and it is baffling why prices are so extreme when the products are less so.
I have a higher end Barska which I like on another gun but, I am sure everyone will say they are crap.

Theres a lot of subjective opinion in the answers to your question, but I will make a suggestion. I would consider a bushnell elite 10x fixed power. They sell on the EE for $200 and obviously for a little more new. Being a fixed power scope, the optical quality is probably pretty good as it's easier to design optics at a fix magnification then a range of magnification. If you want something with more versatility, consider a bushnell elite 5-15x tactical. I have this scope, and for the money it's decent. For casual shooting you'll do, i think both these scopes would serve you well.

What ever U can afford and want is the best scope for your rifle. Anything from 3X9 to a 6X24-50 in FFC battery operated illuminated recticles.

swFa sniper or bushnell 10x is the way to go. The Bushnell being the easier one to obtain and to pay for. Both great adjustment, no gimmicks and are decent glass. Hard to beat for the price.

have a look at hi-lux scope I got one for my m-305 its amazing good quality and price is good also,i got a 4x16x50 I moose hunt with that set up, its good to 500 yards and more am sure if I apply myself,i got mine from wolverine, good luck

I have a straight 6x on mine (Weaver). Would never attempt shooting an animal with it at more than 250yrds and a 6x is more than enough.

On those occasions I want to shoot at paper or a gong at 300-400, the 6x is also plenty. Being a fixed power means it's more robust than a variable, as the cycling of the bolt hammering home + the recoil can wreak havoc on some variables.

More than 400 I take my bolt action out.

If you are going to hunt with it, the Weaver Classic K series models are good value at their typical prices. Depending on the ranges allowed by the terrain and cover in which you want to use it, I suggest Melnibonean's example, the K6, or the K4. They are made in Japan and Weaver says they are engineered to stand up to 10,000 rounds of .375 H&H Magnum.
