Recommendation’s .308

U shud get a Vortex Viper HD 2.5-10.
Best scopes for the money and perfect for your needs.
If you are lucky enough to find one, buy it any price!!

Need more details as to intended use.

My favorite scopes are Leupold 2.5-8 German #1 reticles for everyday bush guns, on my “mountain” rifle I have a Leupold VX3hd 3.5-10 illuminated the crosshair looks like a German #4 reticles that I also like!

I’d go with a Leupold mark 4 2.5-10x42.
You get great glass nice CDS turrets with capped windage
And i really think the PR1 MOA reticle would be nice
Then if you ever feel like range shooting you won’t look out of place on a range day either

When did the classic 3-9x40 become obsolete?

Probably when Leupold decided to have their Vari-XIII/VX3 lineup go from 2.5-8x to 3.5-10x. The 3-9x ended up as the monkey in the middle.

On a 308 hunting rifle I don't think that you can beat a 2.5-8x, if the rifle is lighter, or a 3.5-10x if weight isn't a problem. But a used Burris Signature 3-9x wouldn't be fundamentally wrong either.

I put quite a few Burris on hunting rifles, have no complaints whatsoever. - dan

Another vote for the VX 3 2-8x 36. Enough to do the job well and balances well without adding too much weight. Have one on a model 70 7/08 and am very happy with it.
