In all honesty, the average Bushnell, Burris, Vortex etc. will do just fine. It all depends on your budget and/or wants.hunting between 100-400y moose, elk, deer etc. Northern BC
on deer it's fine but moose and elk?Shooting out to 400 yards I’d be looking for a bit more powder capacity.
Probably when Leupold decided to have their Vari-XIII/VX3 lineup go from 2.5-8x to 3.5-10x. The 3-9x ended up as the monkey in the middle. When did the classic 3-9x40 become obsolete?

I put quite a few Burris on hunting rifles, have no complaints whatsoever. - danProbably when Leupold decided to have their Vari-XIII/VX3 lineup go from 2.5-8x to 3.5-10x. The 3-9x ended up as the monkey in the middle.
On a 308 hunting rifle I don't think that you can beat a 2.5-8x, if the rifle is lighter, or a 3.5-10x if weight isn't a problem. But a used Burris Signature 3-9x wouldn't be fundamentally wrong either.
A good bright 3x9 like the B&L 3x9 on my BRNO 600 (the top rifle).hunting between 100-400y moose, elk, deer etc. Northern BC
