hello there
I was wondering if anybody could recommend a good combo gun or all purpose gun for the bush.
when I get bored I like to go for a walk in the bushes looking for rabbits and chickens. I always seem to come across a coyote at the same time.
I would like to carry one gun instead of 2 when I go for my walk. 22 and 30-06 are a pain ro carry. Was wondering if anyone could recomend something besides a over under 410 22.
Was thinking 243 and 20 guage would be good combo for what I want it for but not sure if you can get something like that.
Well thanks for reading and any ideas would be great.

I have a Valmet 412S with a 12 gauge over .308 barrel and an O/U barrel with interchangeable chokes. With the 12 gauge over .308 you can shoot anything from grouse to moose. Th O/U is great for shooting clays or bird hunting. Which I could find a 9.3x74r barrel set for the big boys...

I have a savage M24 in .222 over 20 ga. that I use for calling in coyotes and fox. (SSG buck shot in the 20 barrel) I use the gun for shooting grouse as well.
I also have a 30/30 over 20 ga. The idea being to carry it when grouse or deer may be on the menu.

My choice is a Brno ZH 304. 7x57R/12ga. and a set of 12ga. OU barrels.

7x57R brass is around but you may have to search a little for it. Prior to getting my 'supply', I used to fire form it from 303Br.

If you have a chance to find a used VOERE go for it. I looked at a lot of combo firearms and then a used VOERE 222 rem/20 gauge came up. They are very well made and do not weigh nearly as much as a Savage. I find that it goes with me more than any other firearm I own.

Your best bets, for something a bit cheaper, are the Savage, the Valmet and the Brno. There are some of those in circulation in used. There are some new Zoli O/U's at Calgary Shooting Centre ($2500 range?). Other than those are the combo guns, more popular rifle calibres (6-7&8mm) with 12 or 20 are not all that hard to come by, prices are all over the wall though, and there are a lot wall hangars that are buyer beware in the lower priced stuff.

just a quick thank you to everyone who replied you give me a few options to look at thanks again I hope to see more ideas.

I second the BRNO ZH. Mine is also 7x57R/12ga. I had the extra full 12ga bbl opened up to I/C for grouse. It's perfect for both deer and upland.

Nice SC. The wood on mine is quite a bit lighter and I like the darker wood on yours. There was one at the last gun show in Duncan with wood and scope mounted, very similar to yours. A local guy I know had it on his table and if I remember correctly, the price he had on it was $1,500.oo and change, which seems a little on the steep side. However...........

I've since traded that scope off for a VXII 1x4. The only downside is that those combo guns weigh almost 9lbs scoped, but they do balance well so it's not so bad to carry them. Wolverine has Norma brass in stock for $75/100. Pretty good price.

I wouldn't pay $1500 for one, but prices do seem to be creeping up a bit. I think they are well built and mine has been quite accurate thus far.

Thoughts of having a combo gun had never been even a remote consideration, until a stop for a quick one day Deer hunt with my brother in law, on my way north on a Moose hunt happened. After a short walk on a windy morning we went for a long round about route drive back to his home. I hadn't paid much attention to what he was packing but he spotted a ditch chicken, stopped, got out and potted it and when a young Mulie Buck broke cover at the sound of the shot, he dropped that as well. My kind of 'double'. Now I was interested, and needed a Brno.
I haven't given much consideration into putting a scope on mine. I've mentioned it in previous posts but the main use mine gets is for the odd walk on old skid roads locally, often when it's raining and blowing a bit. Times and places where you're just as likely to run into a Blacktail as you are a Ruff Grouse. Ranges are close and shots could be fast so a scope would be more of a hindrance than a help, for me. Mine was printing quite a bit higher than I wanted with the 7x57R ammo so I glued a piece of lime green fibre optic to the top of the front sight. That ended up serving two purposes. Lowered the P.O.I. to an acceptable level and made the front sight easier to pick up on the 'targets' in the darker timber areas,

I've always wanted a combination gun something like a .223/12 , figure it be great when hunting yotes in the thick woods, and I've come close to pulling the trigger on some that Trade ex has had over the years, but my issue has always been being able to regulate the two barrels so one barrel will match the point of impact of the other barrel. I know some have this capability to some degree and some do not.
Those of you that have a combination gun how are the POI's on your particular gun ??

I have a Savage 24F in 12ga/.223Remington. I like it, despite the weight and the regulation being imperfect. I'm not small and spent my 20s soldiering so the weight doesn't bother me as much as it would some people, but I'd trade it for a 20ga/.223. I have a fixed 4x scope on Weaver see-thru rings zeroed to the rifle barrel and look through the rings for the shot barrel. The rear sight folds and is also usable through the rings.

See-through rings put the scope too high, so I use a Beartooth comb-raising kit. All of this is not ideal, but it is a workable compromise that is not as bad as having to carry two separate guns.
