Recommendation for my first 270 rifle? Price range $1000

I've read the model 70s were unreliable once so I'd do some research first.

If you use the wrong lubricant in your gun ANY FIREARM will freeze up and seize in extreme weather. I exclusively use dry graphite up here. My Winchester model 70 ran like a top in colder than -40c this past winter. Those 3 dudes probably used the same wrong oil from the one bottle. If its wrong for one gun then its more wrong in 3 guns.....

Ive owned alot of cartridges. Ive narrowed down my bug game hunting battery to 270win and 338 win mag. Both in Xbolts. Covers everything. Killed alot of game with a 270win. Good bullets like the accubond.

Vanguard or a Rem 783. The 783's really shoot! There are some short cuts on it to make you cringe but they shoot! Floated barrel, double pillar bedded, adjustable trigger, sturdy stock. The advantage of the 783 is that you can put a decent optic on it and still stay under a $1000. The optic will probably cost more than the rifle! My 783 (in .308) is the most consistent and accurate rifle in my locker right now. IMHO, stay away form the Ruger American and XPR.... *crap*

Anyway, these are good dilemmas. Good luck with your choice.

I went with the winchester M70 Ultimate Shadow Hunter .270. I've only shot 2 rounds through it so far and it was mint. It's currently getting my new leupold vx 2 3x9x40 mounted and bore sighted. I can't wait to get it back and see what it does.

I would never recommend a 270 for a first rifle. I never found it to kill all that impressively and recoil can be a bit sharp compared to better killers like the 308.

270 win all the way. Had a nice 308 win in a very nice custom Mauser. Didn't last long in safe. I found my 243 win killed better than the 308 win on deer. I have been using the 270win for about 35 yrs.

Bryce, don't let these guys talk you out of the 270, If that is what you want go get one.
I am sure you will have the opportunity to own and shoot other guns during your lifetime.
The 270 has not been a bad choice since 1925.

David

I see i'm a bit late good choice.
