Recommendation for someone just starting out

Here are my twins and almost ready to head out to Hanna, AB next week for the Cdn Sharpshooter LR PRS match.

Yes, I am running Rem 783s....

Awesome looking set ups Jerry! So a heavy barrel is not necessary then? How many rounds fired typically in a stage and how much time is allotted? Many rounds in a short time is heavy barrel territory, just wondering how many shooter make due with lighter barrels. I am looking to get into this type of shooting, haven't had a chance to see any such matches locally ( Northern BC) so as much info you experienced guys can provide is much appreciated.

PRS match in Merritt end of July. Sorry, but consider FB as so much info is linked there. BCPRL.... you can pm KUDU here as he is the match organiser.

PRS or NRL will have rule books... there really isn't any rules beyond safety in velocity to protect the gongs. Open is anything... Tactical is 308 or 223 with limits which you can read about. That's pretty much it.

Wrt to barrels, most stages are 10 rds.... a few may go to 12...... more rds in a stage do exist but very rare.

A heavy barrel is NOT needed for accurate fire with this many rds. In the world of quality match barrels, firing 10 rds in 2 mins is ... MEH. If you need to start shooting 27rds in the middle of summer, then worry about a heavy barrel.

Most will use a heavy profile barrel to balance the rest of their rifle.

Match barrels are very stable even when they get hot.... why typical factory rifles are not ideal for this game as their barrels will likely warp

There are lots of videos on youtube to show you what PRS and NRL is (contingencyX and national rifle league). That will give you a broad overview of courses of fire and distances.

You can debate gear till the cows come home (and the best answers are constantly changing) so pick your poison that fits your budget and come on out. There is no better teacher then shooting an actual match.

You do not need to spend mega dollars to be competitive.... you just need to put the dollars into the parts and tech that will actually lead to positive results.

PM or email if I can help.

What about optics, mil dot or BDC? I have never used a mil dot reticle just duplex and BDC style. Mil dot looks a tad complex. I see Nikon has a P Tactical .308 4-12x40 800 BDC scope, fixed parralax. With the spot on app and 6.5 CM round, it will get you out to over 1000 yds with no math. Looks pretty simple to use.

We can chat on email and cover all the common specs for PRL type events. In general, the preferred is 0.1mil clicks, 10 mil per rev. Xmas tree reticle with 0.2mils spacing

FFP 30mm or 34mm. Exposed turrets, side focus, easy to use eye box. moderate mag range (or at least where you spend the most time)

Can get into brand and scope specifics but this covers the needs in general. With new products, costs for very competitive scopes have dropped a bunch.
