Ruger MkII or MkIII Bull Barrel. Very affordable, dead on accurate, will last a lifetime and then some. Lots of used MkII's around $250-$300 range. Eats any type of .22LR you feed it.
Ruger MKII, or MK III. Accurate, bulletproof, will fire thousands of rounds without cleaning (although, you should still do it). Lots of aftermarked parts and goodies available too.
It's the one I started with, and still have. It's the most fun and dependable shooter I have.

If you want cheap, Norinco M93 (that was my first). Single action revolver... Ruger Single Six. I have one of these also, and really enjoy it. Very accurate and has .22mag cylinder. One friend shoots a Browning Buckmark and another S&W Mod. 41. They love them. There's a lot to chose from.
I was watching Guns & Ammo T.V. a couple of weeks ago when the Ruger Mark III was used in the "Torture Test" segment. The two guys took a brand new Mark III out of the case and played baseball with it. One guy pitched it and the other guy nailed it with a bat. after doing this 7 or 8 times, they inspected the damage.
The barrel was slightly bent, so the tried to straighten it out, which they were able to, then they test fired it. Damn thing worked after all the abuse they put it through. Pretty impressive.
When I get my PAL, the Mark III is on my to buy list.
