Recommendations - First 22 pistol.

My first .22 pistol was a Ruger Mk I T512. There is nothing wrong with the Rugers although I didn't find the trigger that great on my Mk I.

My favourite plinker for the past 15 years has been a Browning Challenger (Belgium). I like the ergonomics and the trigger. Its probably not worth more than $250 so if you can find one its in the entry level price range.

Tradeexcanada.com has some good deals on Browning Medalists right now.

If you're not set on a semi-auto take a look at the S&W 617. A friend has one and I'm very impressed with it. The only drawback is that it's a tad pricey...

I have a Ruger MkII and I'm very happy with it. It's the Timex of .22lr pistols......

My vote goes to the MCM, either by Vostok or Baikal.

Great pistol for the money, very accurate and easy to take apart and put back together. Reliable is an understatement. Have not seen anything it will not feed and eject.
Sillymike might still have a few to sell.
You can compete with it in many disciplines, if you go that way.

The older Brownings are better guns than the buckmarks. If you can find a Medalist or or even a Challenger at a reasonable price, go for it. I bought my Medalist used in the case for $250, now I see them advertised for $650, but it is not for sale.

Ruger MKII, or MK III. Accurate, bulletproof, will fire thousands of rounds without cleaning (although, you should still do it). Lots of aftermarked parts and goodies available too.

Ditto. I see a lot of different guns in informal competition. The Ruger's are far and away the most reliable in a variety of conditions from burning hot to sleeting cold and in between.

I personally love my new Sig Mosquito after taxes I paid about 600 dollars for it but it is an excellent gun and very reliable!
