Hey guys,

I've finally decided to get my 2nd gun, and I want this to be a 22 rifle with a focus on accuracy. As a second priority, I'd like to be able to make it look very tactical (perhaps AR style), but accuracy is still more important. I'm hearing a lot of great stuff about the Ruger 10/22 and I like the look of a stock SR-22. I won't set a price limit, but it should be worth every penny. Perhaps something I can start with and later modify?

Thanks,
Pav

Its not AR15 style, but check out the bolt action (better accuracy than semi auto) savage mark ii TR line - sort of a McMillan stock.
I haven't had a chance to shoot mine since I bought it, but there are tons of reviews out there praising it.

I'm also in the process of building a 10/22 in a SR22 stock that will eventually look very close to this:

Please look up savage btvs on youtube. I bet the savage could outshoot an sr22 any day of the week!
I love my savage, 200+ yds and still killing gophers!

Nice... can a regular 10/22 be converted into that by just replacing parts?

That's 2 votes for Savage Bolt-Action rifles. I'll do some research on these. We've got 22 Silhouette events at our range and I want to kick ass :)

This.... +1

Savage MK II TR ... actualy it's a Boyd's Tacticool Stock. Can't get this stock in Canada anymore (I think)

Yea but it would be cheaper to just get the SR22 and add from there. It's mostly a magpul stock/moe+ grip/afg, and mbus. Battledyne mag, and iron eagle tactical front guard.

If you're thinking about going the sr route, know that it will end up costing you over $1000 and that doesnt include a scope! For that price you could get an awesome bolt action with glass.

I'm trying to decide between a Savage Mark II TR and a BTVS. I guess it just comes down to preference at this point. Any benefit of a TR over BTVS?

I started shooting club level 22 rimfire competitions a year ago . I have always liked rimfire
rifles and have quite a few . If you want to shoot silhouette and " kick ass " the Anschutz 1712
is the rifle to do it with , it is amazing . A good starting place would be a CZ 452/3/5 . They are
very well built , shoot well , and won't break the bank . Savages seem to shoot about the same ,
but aren't made as well . I have 2 Savage Mark II's that don't quite shoot as well as my CZ's .
They just don't fell as comfortable as the CZ's . I also modified two 1022's last year . The KIDD
parts made the 1022 shoot right with my CZ's but cost twice as much . Semi auto's are more
fun to shoot though .

One other thing to think about is ammo . My Anschutz 1712 demands good ammo , $10+ a box .
If you plan on using Blazzers or some other bulk ammo stick with less expensive rifles . My modified
1022 likes CCI Standard Velocity which is much cheaper to shoot, $3 a box.

Good luck with your choice . If possible shoot before you buy . Some guns just fit better so you shoot
them better .

Wished i had kept it.....Mossberg 144 LSB....out shot anything i have ever had. gophers prayed they did not get within the 200+ yard distance . have shot paper too and the gun is amazing.

Your two trains of thought are completely opposing... Accuracy on the one hand AR-style on the other hand... You say that accuracy is at a premium... That means a bolt action repeater or bolt action single or possible a falling block... Most recommendations have been for low end bolts like Savages or CZ's... I own a bunch, so I am not being critical of them, but extreme accuracy in a bench gun calls for specific elements... A solid bolt action (Anschutz), a bench style adjustable stock, a bedded barrel and action, match ammo and A LOT of practice working on technique... That is for "competition level" accuracy... If you just want to beat your buddies at the range... Then get the Savage or CZ, preferably a heavy barrel, with a solid stock, and bed it... Then work on technique with various sub or standard velocity ammos, until you hit on a good combination and have good technique. AR style guns have a lot working against them in the accuracy department... Not that they can't be "reasonably" accurate. Good luck with your search... It might help with recommendations if you give some idea of how accurate you want to be...

Either one for sure are both accurate as any Savage MKII. Comes down to your preference. SS over Carbon Steel, Tacticool Stock over Thumb Hole I'm pretty sure both are machined to the same MKII Series dimensions and specifications.

The SR-22 is a nice piece of kit, pretty accurate too if you were to scope it, but at the end of the day it's just a dressed up 10/22 and will shoot 1-2" at 50m. If an AR15 feel is a must then I would say it is a good option, but expensive and fairly heavy once you've modded it. If I could do it again, I think I would just go with a 10/22 Sporter and get a carbine style stock. That way you can shoot it off the bench a little easier for precision or you can shoot it off hand with big mags for fun. Personally I think that I am a better off-hand shooter when using a normal hunting style stock. What are your expectations for accuracy? If you are looking for under 1" at 50m then you can pretty much rule out all the semis unless you are talking about a more or less custom 10/22.

If you are really looking for accuracy then an inexpensive and excellent choice would be the Savage MKII in any configuration with a heavy barrel. I have shot sub-MOA groups at 100m using Standard Plus ammo. Not only that, precision plinking at 100+m is excellent practice for larger caliber guns and it will help you learn how to read the wind.

I have a MKII and can vouch for it, same with the SR-22. Having said that, I am now looking for a CZ 452 to use for off handed iron sight shooting.

To be quite blunt, neither the SR22 even modded nor the MK II TR are going to help you kick ass in any silhouette match especially with the usual crowd that shoots on the Malahat. The Ruger doesn't have the consistency and the Savage will only qualify for Standard rifle class. It will not conform to hunter class with the stock configuration.
A number of posters have mentioned the CZ - a good rifle at a modest price and the triggers can be tuned easily if need be. The Anschutz series are excellent but not for every budget.

The SR and the Mk II TR may look the part but that's where the ass kicking will stop !

i have had the privilege or luck to be able to play with both quite a bit. i owned the Mk II TR and my buddy had the BTVSS. each had their points depending on what i was doing. for benchrest and prone shooting targets and gophers too i guess, the TR trumped everything as that stock design was uncanny at how it just seemed to fit every shooting holder from one of those MGM 'predator' shooting rests to the regular ones with rear bags,
for offhand i liked the thumbhole.
overall i found myself using and likeing the TR better. the very sharp curve of the pistol grip gave just about the same ergonomics as the thumbhole (for me) and i really liked the finish of the gun.

so in short, that would be X3 for the TR. i used my TR in 100 yd benchrest comps that were more like informal ones but the results were posted for all to see......... and i was shooting against all the established shooters Annie 54's. the only thing holding me back was my inability to be patient. it took a long time to notice when the rest of the crowd had stopped shooting and to put that together with the wind flags were blowing all over. the rifle shot really well and was a mistake to sell - with the blessing pf 20-20 hind sight of course.
good luck in your search and god shooting!
