Anybody have a good go to round for general hunting with a 22?I really don't care about high velocity as long as I can place the round right where I want it.
Thanks,
Hunter.

Any decent "Standard Velocity" 22rf will usually shoot better than any of the high velocity rounds. I know that some will choke and cry about that statement and in some cases they may be lucky enough to have a rifle or handgun that will shoot the lighter, high velocity stuff really well. A session at the bench on bags will tell the real story. If you can't hold into 1 cm or less at 25-50m, you need something more accurate IMHO.

As mentioned, try several different brands.

You can't go wrong with "Federal Gold Medal Match" I haven't found a firearm yet that doesn't like that stuff. It aint cheap though.

I like Remington sub sonics. They are a standard vel, lower noise report, soft lead bullet with a hollow point.

Beware any of the "hyper velocity" stuff. I used to use CCI Stingers and PMC Predators for squirrels when I was a kid. Lucky i was only after the tails, as anything but a good head shot would really open them up. Even the headshots would just about remove the head sometimes.

Like it's been said, try a bunch of ammo. The hollowpoint stuff isn't really going to kill a grouse any deader than a solid. CCI MiniMag round nose might be some to try, CCI blazers, and American Eagle solids (beware...they come in a 40 pack).

I picked up some Stingers, but haven't had a chance to use them yet. The Blazers work really well for me and my Glenfield 70 loves them. For some reason it doesn't like the Federal Game-Shoks, or the American Eagle rounds though. Stove-pipes ~10% of them.

"Try out a variety of .22 brands and see what shoots best in your gun."

22 rifle are funny that way. What works well in my rifle may not group well in yours.

It is a fine way to spend an afternoon -shooting groups with as many different types of ammo as you can find.

Target shooters do the same thing, and when they find a brand and lot# that works, they buy several cases of the same lot #. Ammo can vary quite a bit from one lot to the next, so if your rifle really likes one of the boxes you test, go back to the store and buy a lot more of it.

Target grade ammo is standard velocity. If a lot has too many fliers, it is sold as plinker grade ammo. Sub-standard match ammo can be much better than ordinary plinker grade.

Yup! Recently bought Federal standard velocity for practice ammo versus SK Standard Plus.
This worked out okay for pistol groups at 25 yards, but at 50 yards the Federal brand was pretty much horrible.
Back to SK for 50 yards practice or match shooting.

I also owned 5 different .22lr.Each of those Gun has it own load, and brand.

Go with hollow Points for hunting it expand for a quick kill, you have to be one with your rifle to get precision, all rounds are comparable look at the balistic tables. Practice often is the key.

I tried many make of 22lr in my 1022 nothing ever jam or missfed

if you use a lever action or bolt action try 22 short for small game they are somtime more efficient and will leave the game more intact
