Recommendations for a Sporting Clays gun for my Fiance

Hey,

I run have an 870 and a Model 91 that I use. My fiance shot with her dad growing up, but does not like shooting 12 gauge. She is interested in getting started into Sporting Clays with me. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I've looked online at a couple of the big box stores and nothing really caught our eye.

She's 5'4 and about 125. Says she shot her dads 12 and really didn't like it. Not sure what it was I'll ask him next time I see him.
She's going to sign up for the ladies shoot day at the local Sporting Clays field in June :)

I think our budget will be about $1000. I know its not a lot when it comes to shot guns, but we do have other hobbies.
 
Get her the heaviest gun she can comfortably hold. Then have it fitted to her. Most of the B guns work well. My favourite semi's are the Beretta 391's. I think the best value clays gun right now is probably the Browning 725, but it all comes down to how it fits.
 
Have a look at the Browning Silver Hunter line in 20 ga .they make it in 3 different versions .the standard 14 1/4 " lop the micro 13 3/4" lop and the micro midas 13" lop and right around your price range. all 3 have very nice wood stocks are soft shooting and ideal in weight for a 20 ga .
 
I have a set of 12 and 20G Beretta 686 o/u that work great for clays. For an equivalent size shotshell, the 20G kicks more. The 12 is slightly heavier, but if you're not field hunting , its not like you have to carry it around much, nor for hours.

She just told me her dominant eye is her left, but she's right handed, and was taught to shoot right handed. Gonna get her out with the rifles and see what we can do before she does her Ladies Learn to Shoot Sporting Clays day.

Ah, no. The 16 gauge is not a good recommendation for a new sporting clays shooter.

To the OP, if she is left-eye dominant then she can try shooting from the left side or put a little tape on her glasses over her left eye to occlude the dominant eye. I'd also suggest some shooting instruction for her.
 
Excellent advice on the 20 ga. gas gun, in a Youth/Ladies size.

If she is having trouble learning how to shoot left-handed to accomodate her dominant eye, she can always revert to RH and use some little tricks to force her right eye to dominate.
 
The nice thing about the Beretta 391 is if she does shoot left handed you can change the stock shims for the appropriate cast. And as for recoil a semi auto 20 gauge is a great bet

It would be a good choice if it was still popular and the cost of shells were, as a result of popularity, cheaper. 20 gauge would be ideal even if the 16 gauge was still popular. Improved cylinder, modified choke (or screw in) and get whatever brand/action the two of you have thought out and she likes.

Going to take her out with the .22's and make her shoot left handed and see how she likes it. We have her signed up for a Ladies only Learn to shoot Sporting Clays day that comes with a bunch of instruction. Should be pretty awesome.

I can't recommend anything, but my wife doesn't like shooting a 12 gauge either. She is petite...can't say her weight and height because I might get hung. She bought a 20 gauge Browning gold hunter youth and she can shoot it all day. They don't make them anymore but it might be worth looking at a Browning silver.
 
Silver is a semi auto. I don't know if they make them in a micro or youth. Any 20 gauge semi is much easier to shoot than a 12 gauge. It made big difference for my wife.
