Recommendations for an inexpensive 9mm?

I got some really good input to my question about whether the S&W M&P is a reasonably good choice for a first pistol and it seems that in general while there are a few who are not so impressed with them, most have good experiences to report.
My basis for the question was a handgun that would use the same calibre as the CX4 Storm that could be on my shopping list and I came across the M&P range kit on sale at a good price. Taking the thought a bit further, what would be other general recommendations for a not too expensive 9mm?
I have come across the Walther PPX range kit at an even better price than the M&P. Seems to have good reviews from what I have read.
Others in this price range include:
Norinco NP29 1911
Girsan Compact MC or Regard
IWI Jericho 941 Baby Eagle
Ruger American
I know a little bit about S&W, Walther and Beretta (from shooting air pistols, strangely!) but don't know much about these other brands and while I know it is still a case of ideally trying out before deciding what might suit me, I am sure further comments will be useful. Thanks.
 
Just my suggestion, but if you're going to want to buy the CX4 eventually, just buy that, and spend the money you would have on the "inexpensive" 9mm, on 9mm ammo instead.
 
I compared the PPX and the M&P in-store and I like the way the PPX felt in my hand, like it was meant for me. The M&P and the SR9 that I looked at and held just felt "off". And the PPX Range Kit was a great deal at the time, even if at the high-end of my then-budget. Heck, the PPX wasn't even really on my short-list!!

Haven't held the others, and not familiar with the CX4. Very few issues with the PPX.


Tough to say what to do....go for the CX4 or work your way up to it. Either way....start stockpiling ammo now, you'll eventually just.need.more!!

Honestly, it may just come to that. I am kicking around ideas at the moment and there may not even be a CX4 - it depends what the range tells me regarding which sections I could use it on (wish I had my own land...). If steel action targets are on the list, that could swing it as I would not want to buy something like that just for punching holes in paper. If that's all I could do, I may get the CX4 pellet gun plinker instead but still come back to a handgun at some point - but then the choice is wide open...
 
The PPX kit is astonishingly inexpensive for what you get. It was my first pistol and it's still around for when I'd like to shoot a polymer or when friends come shooting with me. It's had about 1200 rounds through it now and I can vouch for its reliability and shootability.

Great pistol for $700 plus let alone 400 bucks.
 
Fns9 is a great pistol for a great price if you can find one on sale, usually $499-599, depending on the dealer, also the Canik tps9, great pistol for around $550. I have the FNS and my buddy has the Canik, we both agree that the Canik has a nicer trigger for sure, but we also both agree the FNS is a much higher quality build. Watch all the videos you can on YouTube, great source of info on any gun you are interested in, But more importantly HANDLE as many as possible, what works for me might not work for you. When I started looking for my first handgun, I was very fortunate to have a couple of local CGN'ers let me try out there pistols, perhaps you could find someone local to let you try theirs out? There are some awesome people here who don't mind helping a new guy out, best of luck in your search!

Only problem with FN is there is no Canadian support for them, I have one and found out the hard way the canadian importer only brings in the firearms, no parts and according to them have no plans on changing their policy anytime soon, Cant find any US dealers that will ship to Canada and FN USA wont even return my messages.

They are not bad if you watch for deals, I have a couple dozen now and paid around $50 each, the dealer that is gone from on here now usually has them, they also have mecgar for around $35 and everyone says they work just as good as the factory ones. There was a guy on here selling the 15 pinned to 10 sand resistant ones for $50 ea if you bought 4 or more at a time.
 
From experience shooting IDPA in temperatures below -10 ... I've seen one dude with a Jericho that stovepipes / fails to feed a lot. Almost every shot. Two folks with PPX's ... and both seem to do okay but have extraction issues at low temperatures. Both guns were useless at one match that had temperatures in the -20 range. My PPQ had extraction issues at that temp as well but the M&P did not fail at all at those low temperatures. I haven't tried shooting my CX4 at those temps.

I would recommend the M&P over the PPX or Jericho.
 
If you're looking at the goodies that come with the gun instead of the gun itself, then you're setting yourself up for failure. Don't look at the walther ppx range kit as a good buy at $500 because it comes with a holster and 3 mags. Instead, look at the ppx itself at $500 and ask is the gun right for you.
 
My Norinco 1911 NP29 9mm is awesome, really happy with it, haven't been able to use mine a WHOLE lot so not sure if it needs to be worked in but i have found that you must give it a good bump to seat the magazine correctly, a few time i havent went to fire thinking i have a dry fire and the mag is just sitting a few milllimetre's short , I did also drop my mag into a pile of sand, the gun got dirty but still functioned no issue's!
