I know very little about shotguns. I have some friends to guide me but would like some more info. I am looking for an economical shotgun package, preferably with interchangable choke tubes, for various species of water fowl. Duck, goose, swan, as well as ptarmigan (yes I know that is not water fowl). I would like to spend no more than $600 - 700.

Thanks
Matt

I shoot a MOSSBERG Maverick 88 ... cost only approx $280 from SIR Ltd in Manitoba(do a google search or somebody in Kug has to have a catalogue) ... use an extra full choke when shooting high up for geese, regular choke when shooting ptarmigan ... and well for the price of the pump action you don't mind throwing it about ... ;)

p.s. my MOSSBERG shoots geese just as well as me friends $600-1000 shotties ... ;) HAHA

Things to consider...
3.5 inch chamber
choke tubes
Vent rib barrel
PUMP action, less problems...
Synthetic stock
26 inch barrel, good for ducks etc, a compromise for upland guns which are usually shorter...

I shoot a Benelli Nova, comes with all the above, 3 choke tubes and is tough as hell...

Cheers
Jay

All the above recommendations make lots of sense. Pretty much any pump will work, find one that YOU like and fits you. If you don't know what that means, either talk to a gunsmith, a KNOWLEDGEABLE shotgun salesman, and/or somebody at a trap/skeet club.

why not a semi-auto? mossberg 930 would do the job for all the species mentionned, I personnaly have a stoeger uplander, not the best for waterfowl (because breaking the action in a goose blind is harder) but work good and so perfect for upland.
I'll order soon a 935 mossberg for waterfowl only as it dont take well 2-3/4 shell

If it's your first shotgun , probably a pump is less complicated, but a side by side and over under is even simplier to clean and operate.
Cheap SxS and O/u need some time to get smooth and easy to break open and but they serve well for the price.

Just my opinion.
