Will primarily be used as a range toy and occasional CAS events; already have a .44 Mag Redhawk, so looking for a matching caliber lever rifle.

The Miroku Winchester is an absolutely beautiful rifle, I have 2, one in 44 RM and one in 44-40. I cannot extol the virtues enough.......best fit and workmanship I have seen on a firearm under 5K in years.

Winchester model 92 if north of a grand is in your budget or a Marlin 1894 at around half that price will give you a very dependable and long lasting rifle as well.

It's a romantic idea but the loads are seldom the same, and there is always the danger of putting rifle loads in your revolver...but I vote for a Winchester 94 myself.

No danger. Any load approved for a 44 magnum rifle will also be approved for a 44 magnum revolver.
Take a look at Hodgdon on line. The same powder, same charge for a given bullet, the only difference being the velocity of the bullet being much higher in the rifle.
The lower velocity for the revolver is mainly due to the pressure leaking through the gap between the cylinder and the forcing cone, as well as somewhat of a loss with the shorter barrels of the revolvers.

Lol...true, but the Rossi 92 .44 mag uses the same receiver as the 454 Casull version so both are a good match for each other. Not being available as a takedown model would be the only thing stopping it from being a perfect carbine.

How about a Henry? They have several models in .44Mag, some steel, some brass colored, some with engraving.

Thanks for the input everyone, not looking to spend top dollar so Rossi and Marlin are looking good right now (along with haunting the EE for a deal lol).

The only deal breaker for me in the Henry was the tube feed. It is a well made and beautiful rifle but having to twist out the plunger then feed the rounds into the tube did not fit into the bush gun use I wanted. Plus I'd always be worried about breaking or losing the magazine rod.

Good to know. Better safe than sorry though. I was just thinking back to a time I bought a lever gun and the seller gave me some handloads but said specifically don't shoot them out of a handgun as they were hot.

While we're on the topic if .44 magnums, I hear that you can shoot .44 special rounds out of a .44 mag, can anyone confirm this?

+1

I own two, and they're the finest made guns I own. Not as "traditional" as some, but I don't mind the top mounted safety. Makes a great woods gun and the most fun range toy I own aside from my marlin cowboy limited .357.

Big problem is actually finding one. They are near impossible to find. I have a Henry and love it. The tube feed is a bit of a pain, but I'd take it over a Marlin or Rossi.

as far as rossi...I had a one that was 100% reliable and another that was 100% crap.....they say the newer ones are built by Taurus and they say the quality went up since the takeover...
