Hello,

I am contemplating the possible options for the optics to be installed on my Ruger 10/22 (Takedown model, if that matters).
It is going to be used mostly for plinking, but possibly for small game hunting.
In this respect, I would appreciate any recommendation for the relevant makes and models of the sights and the rings, but even more so I'd be happy to hear from those speaking from their personal experience

My concerns are (not necessarily in the importance order):
- Compatibility with 10/22's mounting screws location.
- Cost of the complete setup (the lower the better, while still maintaining a relatively decent quality).
- Durability.
- Water- and shock-proof (although this is not as important, would still be nice to have).
- (Nice to have) possibility of falling back to the original iron sites.
- Preferably no electronics / batteries involved (such as in illuminated / variable shape reticles).

I am still quite a newbie in this neck of the woods, so please be patient if some of my questions sound stupid ;)

Thanks for your input!

Don't go too high on the magnification if you might hunt close up. I would go with a 3-9x and no larger than 40mm. Even a 2-7x32 as it is compact and fitting for a small rifle. A rim fire version is best,as its focus and parallax is set for closer distance.

I've got an older Bushnell Varmint model in 2.5-10x 50mm and love it.. good for close up and quick hunting applications but can take it to 10x if needed for long shots on still game. Get a good shoot through rail so you can still use your irons.

i have a bushnell banner, 3.5-10x36 with an adjustable objective (10yd min distance). basically ideal for short/medium range 22LR shooting, and it's waterproof (but i've never got it wet)

i just took OFF a sightron SII-B 6.5-20 and put that banner on my Savage TRR since the banner focuses closer, which is important for me when shooting indoors. that sightron - as nice as it is - will go up for sale since i am severely underutilizing it

I just installed a 4x 32 Simmons and will take it out today to test it out. It's compact and still fits in the Take Down bag. I originally bought the Simmons 3-9x 32 and while it is a good scope was too long and wouldn't fit in bag.

Do you think it would still fit into the bag if mounted on shoot through rails?

At first I cheaped out and went the Tasco route, 6-24 and 10-40, then looked for a laser scope combo $125 ebay, then just green laser $40 ebay, then cheaped out again and got the BSA sweet 22 6-18.
However I finally spent the coin and got a Sightron 10-50 scope. Atleast this way I can put the scope on my Su16 and my .22s using quick detach rings.
The sweet 22 isn't bad, I didn't like the tacso parallax being on the front and not a side adjustment. The Sweet and sightron both have side parallax which really helps.
The sightron was about $200 less from 4scopes.com compared to Canadian dealors. I got it in 2 days and no shipping hassle extra charges other than gst. I thought scopes were controlled now however from 4scopes it wasn't an issue.
$200 in my pocket means more ammo!

I recently purchased the Simmons 3-9x 32mm, however, the rings do not appear to mount to the stock Ruger 10/22 Takedown rail. Any recommendations? Maybe I have no clue how to mount a scope properly?

I would ask what range you figure on shooting at. 25yds? 50 yds? 100 yds? It makes a difference - if you figure on staying within 50 yards, there's no point in having a high powered scope on it. You'd need an AO scope, regardless of magnification, at that range.

I put a Red Dot on mine, and it's bang on minute-of-golf ball at 50 yards, offhand. For longer ranges then that, I'll be using my bolt-action. The Red Dot is very compact, allows virtually instant sight picture acquisition, and works in any light.

I would go for a low scope rail that is grooved down the middle (like the UTG, http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail....2&level2=&itemno=MNT-22TOWL&status=&mtrack=7m) to not inhibit the iron sights, and go with a set of quality quick-detach rings if you desire the use of iron sights. See-through rings are pretty hokey at best! A compact low power scope would fit the bill nicely, I have no particular preference, but the good options are pretty limited.

The Leapers Bug Buster is a great little compact plinking scope... don't be fooled by the low price, it is well made... I have owned a half dozen of them over the years... get the 3-9X32mm it is only 8.5" long and comes with a 2" sunshade, mil-dot reticle and red/green crosshair illumination... ideal for small game and plinking.
