I've broken the handles off of my RCBS Case/Media separator and need to buy another one. I do high volumes of reloading and had planned on buying a Dillon Case/Media separator but was warned by a friend that the Dillon model doesn't have a lid and that dust flies all over the place. I've always been a Dillon customer and do like the size of their biggest models. Anyone have any suggestions for a Case/Media separator that is pretty big and good quality?

Go to a dollar store and buy a plastic collander with a handle. You may need to drill the bottom holes a bit bigger. Then dump and shake over a big shoe box.

Spaghetti strainer or a used screen window. Cheap and they work. - dan

I tried this method with horrible results as follows:

Media all over the place as you have to get the cases upside down a few times to get it all out which causes a lot of it to fly or bounce out onto the floor.
Dust flying up in your face as you toss them about trying to flip them over the several times needed to empty them.
You can't do more than a handful at a time as the plastic strainers are not large enough to accomodate a large number of cases being flipped end over end.

I just got my RCBS media separator and would buy another if need be. I don't know about the Dillon as the RCBS is my first.

Went to the Safeway, bought a Tupperware cake storage tub (about 8" deep, 12" wide and 15" long), drilled a bunch of holes (smaller than my 9mm brass) which took about 4 minutes. The cake tub has a plastic snap on cover so - no dust. I fill the tub with brass and media and jiggle the darn thing over a large, flexible 3 gallon bucket (used to contain protein powder from the Health Food store). I saw a car wash bucket at Canadian Tire for $2.99 that would work pretty well too. It has a handy little 'pour' spout which makes returning media to your case cleaner real easy. Total Cost - $7.59 for the Tupperware, $2.99 for the bucket.
I also have a C*-200 case/media separator from my favorite 'Precision' reloading company. My Tupperware gizmo works better, it's faster, cleaner and I didn't spend $60 bucks on it.

My Dillon separator is awesome. I wouldn't be without one. There is some dust involved, but it is from pouring the media from the cleaner into the separator (rather than the separation process, which takes only seconds). Pour slowly, produce less dust. It works exactly as advertised.

In my opinion, a person who would recommend a strainer (or whatever) in place of one doesn't know what he or she is talking about.

I dump mine in a blue wash tub, the plastic kind that fit in a sink? then hand pick the brass out. no mess, and fast enough for me. put a couple used dryer sheets in your tumbler with the brass if you're worried about dust. solves that prob very quick.

Do it inside a large box, the media just falls to the bottom of the box. - dan

Hello, try using a stainless steel baby bottle steamer ( or any similar item) with 3 parts...lid, bottle holder laden with mesh, and bottom pot (where you put water when steaming). Just pour on the media with casing, cover and shake, shake, shake. After few minutes of shaking... let it sit for the dust to settle on the bottom pot. Open and wallah!

This is my receipe, one dollarama plastic wastepaper and one wire mesh wastepaper basket slightly smaller also from dollarama, fit mesh basket into plastic basket and aggitate. $2.00 spent, works great.
