Recommended Gun Project?

Good Day!

I'm working on assembling my Garand (and I've assembled several AR15's, for what it's worth), and I'm already thinking about what my next project will be. Any recommendations on a rifle to build? I was thinking something mil-surp like a garand, but different. Perhaps a VZ58? Maybe a 1911? I'd go for an RPD, but they don't have an FRT yet. Something belt fed would be awesome, I'm just not sure what would be a good entry level project.

Any recommendations on my next project? I'd be looking for something with minimal machine work, but I'd love to finish ream the chamber etc. I don't have a lathe or a mill though.

Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

For a scratch built entry level project, research the Chicopee single shot rifles designed by Frank deHaas. Not belt fed, though...

That looks like a neat project! I've bookmarked a page on it for further reading.

I was thinking along the lines of assembly from a milsurp parts kit with a NOS or new semi auto receiver, possibly with chambering etc. I was wondering if there were any other semi common builds out there that were fun. Maybe an 80% AR15 lower? Belt fed wouldn't be cheap, but it would be awesome.

Mauser suggestion is pretty good too.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

wbaad - I am sure the larger version would handle .38Sp. I have seen one - beautifully made - chambered for .30-30.

mspben - There are different beltfed guns which have been assembled from parts kits. Making a beltfed not using a parts kit would be an amazing accomplishment.

If you have not already done so, go to weaponsguild.com. There are some very talented folks there.

If you want to learn real gunsmithing skills, consider scratch building muzzleloading guns.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to see what I can get for tools that would let me build some of these. Muzzle loader would be cool too. 308 m1919 receivers and parts kits aren't too ridiculously expensive, so I'm considering going that as well.
