What do you guys recommend for a relatively low velocity 22lr? Picked up a Marlin 1892 (DOM 1898) last weekend, and higher velocity ammo is a no-no in these. Just looking for something for casual plinking - not too expensive.

Try CCI standard velocity 22LR

X3 thats my brand too, fairly accurate for the money. Remington subsonics - I am not sure whats wrong with them but they foul action on my rifles a bit too much too quick, mabe cases are bit smaller in diameter or whatever. Plus not nearly as consistent as CCI's.

I shoot Lee-Enfield .22 milsurp rifles so am in the same boat, as these rarely take beyond low supersonics at all well (my current favourite rifle is a 1915 trainer which has probably had millions of rounds through it, and has some unhappy throat erosion - but still a joy to shoot if you stay under 40 yds and are happy with a two inch group!).

I've tried pretty well everything subsonic around and agree that CCI standard is probably as good as you're going to get, and widely available. Remington subsonics are OK but are relatively underpowered, I think about 1050 fps as opposed to about 1080 for the CCIs. Another 1080ish is the Federal Gold Star 711B, I think (there are two Federal Gold Stars, and be careful to get the subsonic one!). Currently I'm shooting Eley ammunition out of my v accurate Lee Enfield C no 7. It's British target ammo sold here by Remington and comes in three or four grades, from cheap target to expensive match grade (about equal to the green tag CCI), all about 1080 fps. The smell is an acquired taste if you're used to American made 22 ammo!

Some of the faster subs can go super in the right humidity/temp, so beware the occasional crack and wear ear protection. I think I've only had this happen regularly with the Federal Gold Star.

Ammo like CCI standard velocity and Remington subsonics are allright but not quite in the same league (in my opinion anyway) as Lapua or Eley - even the cheaper stuff from these companies.

I agree, Lapua Super Club is way better choice, but availability sucks. Most storekeepers never even heard such name. Try Fiochi, some people like it better then CCI's.

How could I forget Federal Gold Match ammo? I haven't had them for quite a while but those were on par with Lapua. Almost.

Yes, when I said CCI standard is as good as you're going to get, I meant as a basic 22 subsonic. Eley is superior in accuracy and consistency, in my experience, but is not so easy to buy and is more expensive at least in the top grades.

Winchester Dyna-Points are standard velocity. Pretty cheap to buy, and in my experience quite accurate. They are $17.97 (I think) at Wally-World, not a bad price, although they were a couple of bucks cheaper a few months ago.

where do you guys pick up your eley and lapua ammo from? i'm in saskatoon and i dont think there are many places that actually carry a wide variety of ammo. one place only had winchester wildcats for .22 ammo.

CCI CB Short works great in My 1912'ish Marlin 20 pump. You might want to check the bolt on that '92 before shooting. Not a lot of people are in the know about the trouble modern High Velocity LR ammo causes. A sign of previous troubles are small cracks on the bolt face, and sometimes accompanied by a busted firing pin...

I checked her over good Doc. And I actually dug out some CCI CB shorts I had stashed away and tried her over the weekend (it was a quick range trip - damn rain  ). With the muffs on, I thought my first shot was a misfire. They're really quiet out of a 24" barrel. Cyles them fine too.

Is there anyone else besides CCI that makes CB shorts? Maybe in bulk packs?

I've asked the owner of the local shop to order me in some CB Longs to try. I'm not going to be shooting bricks through it at a time anyway (have a 39a for that). One thing I did notice though - the Rem subsonics didn't cyle all that well - seemed just a hair too long.
