Recommended non standard hunting cartridge??

358 Winchester fits the bill perfectly. No question, the hands down winner.

not so! OP says no excessive recoil! My 358 Browning BLR had more recoil that what I cared for. I'm not a pussy, nor pussy whipped, pussy eater ok, but I don't like any more recoil than necessary! I draw my line at my Ruger No.1 A 30-06 and my Browning Micro Medallion 308.

Why this over a 308?

Why not...

I have M77 MKII International's in .243/.308/.358

And No.1 International's in .257/7X57... and so the 7.62X57 made sense (to me anyway)...

8mm Mauser brass necked down to .308 with no fire forming... run it through the die and load, easy as pie... To get a No.1 International in .308 I would have to rechamber/rebore a .243 RSI... just as easy to do the rechamber/rebore on a 7X57 RSI... c'est ca... it's different but easy... and components are common... that was the rationale...

It will prove there's a difference between .308 and .30-06, should name it the .30 Between. :)

I tried to get Douglas onto naming it... he didn't bite, in spite of his propensity for naming cartridges... he did point out that 7.62X57 would be a more appropriate moniker when I had taken to calling it a ".308X57"... and I agree, but I always get hung up on the bad math when it comes to metric monikers... the ".30 Between" works for me... as long as it is not "between a rock and a hard place..."

Could always Canadianize it Hoyt,

.30 Muskox
.30 Eh
.30 Boreal
.30 Moose
.30 'Boo
.30 Molson
.30 Loonie
.30 Maple
.30 Poutine
.30 Riel
.30 Northerner
.30 Canuck

And here, I thought "Between" was a quintessential Canadian name.... heaven forbid we take a stand... on anything...

I guess that proves that everyone's perception of recoil is different, I have had 2 Browning BLRs in 358 and currently have a Ruger Hawkeye so chambered and I find both of them very reasonable in the recoil department. Certainly more than my 308s, well except for the Winchester M88-it is a recoil #####! I am not a big guy and I am no fan of recoil, and when shooting at game I think everyone feels recoil even less with adrenaline surging.
