Folks, I am loking for some advice on a decent .22 revolver. Decent in terms of precision, usage (not restricted to a speciffic ammo manufacturer), maintenance and lastly price.

Greatly appreciate!

Smith and Wesson Model 17s show up periodically used in the EE and at gun stores. You will also very rarely see new specimen pop up at some websites and shops. These are expensive six-shot double-action revolvers that are worth every penny. Some people balk at spending $700+ on a .22 revolver, but the way I look at it, I shoot more .22 LR than anything else. My Model 17 is the gun I shoot the most. It makes sense to spend on a quality piece when you're going to use it a lot.

What's good and what's actually available out there, are unfortunately two different things. The new S&W 617 are hard to come by and the Ruger SP101 is almost impossible.
In my opinion the order would be:
1. S&W 617
2. S&W 17
3. Ruger 101
4. Taurus

99. Charter Arms

S&W model 17 to 17-4
S&W K22
S&W 617

best revolver period, only a $5K Korth will equal or beat the Smith 22 revolvers!

Tradex Canada has a well used K22 and a 17 for sale under $500 right now!

The S&W .22 revolvers are the best gun for the money that you can buy. There are nicer ones but they cost a lot more. Most of the cheap ones are not worth taking home.

A mint condition H&R Sentinel is nothing to be sneezed at, nor is a good 999 sportsman. Not a Smith mind you, but not all that bad either.

I've gone through the .22 revolver Merry Go 'Round with a few options. In the end I finally ended up with an older "3 screw" Ruger Single Six for a single action gun and a S&W Model 17 for a double/single action gun. Along the way I had a Hi Standard Double Nine, H&R top break 999 and an H&R 929.

I'm sorry to all the Hi Standard and H&R fans but none of them can hold a candle to the Ruger and S&W guns by a long shot.

I've kept the top break simply due to it being a 9 shot and a top break action which is really sweet on it's own. But when I shoot it I simply do not expect the same level of accuracy as the Ruger or S&W. The H&R guns typically produce groups that are roughly not quite double the groups of the Ruger and S&W.

Simply put if you want a more accurate revolver you need to choose a Ruger for a single action style or a S&W or Colt for a DA/SA tip out ejector style revolver. OK, the Korth would be a third option but let's face the fact that they are priced outside the range of consideration for pretty much the big majority of folks.

another S&W fanboy here! Love it, picked up a 617 and then ordered up some speed loaders for it as loading 10 little .22LR needs to be sped up a bit

Ruger Single-Six vote here, only because I don't have a Single-Ten (.22lr) or Single-Nine (.22WMR) yet.

Don't count this as a vote against the 617; I just don't have one to compare.

Agreed as I have the 999 Sportman and it shoots great. Bought it about 12 years ago off a guy that needed cash for $100.00 and I haven't a clue what they are going for now.
