Recommengations for recoil absorbing buttstock for my 590?

Some good info , not to crazy about how the front was done with out the groved ring for the receiver , but looks like it'd work .

Wow! Good job, eh? I could tinker with this idea once I've got a new stock installed on the Mossy. I think I'd have to get a few more tools first, tho!

If you go the ATI route, or any adjustable stock, take a look into a side saddle for your extra shells.
I've got a Mesa Tactical 8-shell saddle on mine, which is ideal because my magazine holds 8...for you, maybe grab a 4-shell holder to replace the speed feed stock.
I'm pretty sure you can find those at Cabelas too.

Yes, I've been considering that. I've got the 8 shell mag too. Those side "cards" w/ the Velcro seem like a good idea. Carry a couple in your pocket as well in case a civil war breaks out.

I have a full rig for the Mossy 590 if ye want.

My Mossy 835 & Winchester 1200 trap guns with is set-up. I added some foam pipe insulation to the stocks for shooting on cold days. The butt pads are Viking.

The Magpul SGA with either the factory recoil pad or Remington Supercell is most effective in my experience.

Is there one of these stocks that does not require you to first remove it in order to pull the trigger assembly out?
Certainly I don't do that every single time I clean mine, but it is a factor, especially on any buttstock design that gets a bit looser each time it gets reassembled.

(e.g. the plastic 'tactical' replacement stock on my old SKS had a woodscrew holding the pistol grip on. Every time I wanted to field strip it I had to thread that screw out and back in.)

Most will require you to back off the buttstock screw or sand off some material so you don't have to. How often do you have to clean a pump shotgun anyway???

I put on a wood Mossberg buttstock and still had to loosen the bolt to get the trigger group out.

For the Mossberg, you simply sand a few milimeters off the trigger tab insert and the trigger group will pass through easily.

Same with the Tapco SKS, remove the ridge inside the grip and you'll never have to unscrew the grip again.

If you don't want a pistol grip type of buttstock check out the ATI Akita. I had one on a maverick 12ga and the pad on it was excellent and it let you adjust the length of pull.

Magpul for sure, and most traditional "field" type stocks.

You can just barely see sanded portion on the gray Mossberg stock in this photo.

My apologies, but what do you mean by sanding the trigger tab insert? I couldn't see the sanded portion you mentioned in that picture from your later post. I bought a SGA stock for my 590A1 but I'm a bit paranoid I won't be able to get it off later because I can't for the life of me figure out how the thumb strip (covering the receiver screw) is supposed to come back off after installation.

Update from OP:

I too opted for an SGA. Despite how perfect it all looked when I tightened up, the trigger assembly would not budge, no matter how hard I tugged on it. Determined to have it removable, I took the stock off in order to gain better access. Since I'm using the metal trigger assembly of the 590A1, enlarging the size of the inset opening of the stock was the only way to get more clearance.
I tried increasing the gap using a strip of sandpaper wrapped around a pencil eraser, but that method did nothing. Next I tried 50 strokes with my small rat-tail file and tried again. Still not enough. Ugh--at that rate it was going to need about 300 more strokes. Throwing caution to the winds, I grabbed the Dremel. Ten seconds with the 1/2" sanding drum finished the job; I should have quit at five. There's a 1/32" gap at the back end of that curve, but the trigger guard now moves freely through its final arc.
Now, if I can just learn the knack of holding the cartridge stop and interrupter in place while I ease the trigger assembly home.... q:0/

Oh, and BTW-- This Magpul stock is much better at managing recoil which, you may recall, was the original intent of this thread. I'm currently running it with one (1) of the included 1/2" shims which gives me a more comfortable LoP. I want to try one of their comb risers to see how it affects my cheek weld.
