Firstly, record keeping of some sort, I think, is essential to load development. How it is done matters not, just the fact that it is done and there exists some data that can be examined and manipulated in order to achieve precision. I have a hardcover notebook that I have tab divided into sections for each of the guns I shoot. Within each category, I list each type of projectile that I shoot (e.g. Hornady 52 gr. BTHP). For each different type of bullet I record the measurement that I made with my Hornady OAL guage. I also record each powder and charge I have tried along with the smallest group shot with that particular load. For load testing purposes, I shoot two strings of 5. So for every 10 rounds I make a label printed on peelable media. When I come home from the range I peel off the label and attach it to the appropriate target. This I save.
