Hey there, how are we all?

Just wondering if any of you have had the chance to hunt Red deer in the roar, or anytime for that matter.

Would like to hear about the hunt and look at some pictures!!

Cheers

WL

WL,

i may have somewhere a picture of a red deer we took before moving to Canada.

we hunted them mostly in as driven way with dogs pushing them or stalking when we were not able to finish the hunting plan.

we were using too the drucken (german name for small team driven) way with few dogs and pushing the game in front of you.

i hunted once while trying to call during the roar and it was woowww but never get the one that was authorized on the license ...

WL,

now a story.

this morning at the round Alain the president was serious a bunch (herd) was seen on the highest point and the early walk with hunting dogs on leash reveals some promising tracks.

we draw the best position and Lulu ( Lucien told us he killed his first red deer with my wife grand dad many moons ago) there we go. in the high close to a nice clearcut, while staying we heard wild boars and roe deers rushing away then no more noise nor the dogs ... suddenly a big crash in the dark forest and close to the big oak. then here it is the red deer the male the boss of the herd.

we were told this morning no more than a 10 or 2x5 and there is no error doable: the ticket is 1500 euros and three years of no red deer hunting ....

i tried with my binoculars to see the points then i found out 11 points so the heym 9.3z62 stayed in lower position. we have seen that red deer for 10 minutes then decided to leave with no noises.

later two guests deciced to shot it despite the limitations. game warden came to seize the head and the meat and of course giving the fine ...

the regulations in Europe are sometimes hard to understand but that is the way the job is done there.

i hope i will be able to find that picture somewhere.

all the best.

Phil

Thought you were looking to meet people in Red Deer, a city in Alberta. :) Usually we refer to them as elk or Wapiti and hunt them in the Rut. They have a much more majestic bugle than your European Red Deer roar, which is really pathetic in comparison.

Way to go Grizzly... Red deer roar is not Pathetic, the elk is different, very different, what iv heard anyway, the whistle they do..

Red deer pathetic, laughable mate.

Wapiti is an Elk. A Red deer is a Red Deer.... hybrids throughout NZ fiords

Medvec, thats a different scenerio to what we do an i understand thats how ots done in Euro.

I also hear the Trophy price catorgories sometimes depends on KG of the head an antlers, referred to as say a 7kg or a 10kg head.... big money differences , as you would find with a 10pt or 12pt max head.

I got lucky last wwek and shot a 13 point stag.
Was hoping to see some hunters photos and stories about their RED DEER, not elk or wap, maybe you hubted Scotland, Argentine, New Zealand freerange an suppose i could listen to a penned hunt but prefer the Pics.

The Red are scare down my Way here in Australia, i chase em alot an seldom see a stag.. mostly Hinds.

Being moments away from a ROAR all the deer have come out an i hope to find Mr Big for the Wall!

i ve heard both and the whistle is coming from the elk, the roar is coming from the red deer. the end of an elk buggle is like the complete red deer roar ...

WL,

yes in Europe or most of the Europe they re charing by weight ... when you are a local in France you pay the tag or the hunter association do so nothing with the weight but the tag is given for a doe, a calf, less than 10 points, 10 points and above ...

we had only free range and i had the picture of the last we took maybe somewhere but this is now a while ago.

still digging in the archive.

I was in a game park in Germany, when the Red Deer were what we would call in rut. They also had The Asian version there as well . Quite the concert.:) Only real Red Deer in Canada are behind Fences. City of Red Deer got it's name cause the early explorers had to hang a name on them and that was the closest they knew. To get the full benefit of an elk bugle, you have to be in a remote mountain valley with the sun shining, snow on the ground and your fingers are freezing, as you get off your horse. ;)

i can get here and listen them with everything except horse and you are right that is really magic ... dont do fence hunts so cant tell.

I used to hunt Reds when I lived in the UK. The rut sometimes was spectacular, other times not so much, just like Elk. The two animals
are very similar, to the point where they can interbreed. The roar of a red is very deep, and does'nt tail off to a whistle as much as an Elk. Red's roar sometimes is just a long grunt, Sika just whistle.
I tried calling Reds with little success, Elk are way easier to call.
