Okay, i've never owned a red dot sight before, so I have a couple questions...What is the typical useful range of a red dot and is it hard to see on bright days. Also, what type of mount will retain zero on my 858 reliably. I currently have a Fabarm foregrip on it...will this work? Thanks.

Range of red dot = whatever you like. I shoot at 200 & 300m gongs with mine. At 100m it's about a 4-5" gun with surplus ammo. On the brightest sunniest day I can still keep both eyes open and see it clear as a bell.

I had the Fabarm but changed out to the NEA/Neit metal one. My zero definitely changed with the plastic Fabarm. Have only shot it once with the metal one, retest is tomorrow or Sat. But the word is, this is definitely the way to go and that they retain zero well.

It's the Vortex StrikeFire ($189 WSS), in an ADM 68L low quick release mount (about $110, TSE).

NEA handguard and Bushnell TRS-25. It's a reliable, inexpensive combo that co-witnesses and is excellent at holding and returning to zero. The only limiting factors with a red dot at longer range are the dot size and estimating how much hold-over.

NEA handguard and Eotech here...will eventually replace the Eotech with an Aimpoint T1.

The NEA mount is the only way to go IMO. I also used to have the FAB handguards. They are fine as handguards but for mounting an optic...not as good.

The NEA gear is top flight gear. It's not really that much more expensive, and when you think about what you're getting, it's a no-brainer.

IMO you run out of steam with x39 before you run out of range with a red dot. It is the perfect optic for a VZ.

Red dot is perfect for the 858 as was already stated, the caliber is more the limitation than the red dot. I use the NEA mount and Bushnell TRS-25. Excellent combo. Return to zero seems good after cleaning too.

Rackman, You are not thinking of lazer are you?
They are close up things unless you spend big money.
Red dots are just scopes with a dot like a cross hair.
They are great for this type of thing and i use them on handguns
also.
But as with everything, you get what you pay for , don't go to cheap.

I use a Vortex Strikefire also. I have it with the stock mount but placed a little farther forward. Has perfect co-witness with the irons.

I don't think this gun needs any magnification as the red dot is as accurate as the gun/ammo to proper ranges. (ie aint gonna get 1" groups at 500yds)
