I used a red dot for the first time at the Carbine Clinic. It was rather dim and I could barely see it on the target.

I wonder if it was a battery issue? Does a red dot get dimmer in cold weather?

It is a cheap Chinese unit.

I will put it in the freezer overnight and try it again.

Cold temps do have an effect on the battery and you were shooting in pretty bright conditions with all the reflection off the snow, it will definitely appear dimmer. If you freeze it make sure you either do a before and after check of brightness or go outside as it will seem bright no matter what indoors. I'll use old batteries for indoor matches since the dot doesn't have to be nearly as bright.

The chemical reaction in the battery slows at cooler temps, and therefore puts out less power.

Lithium cells are a little less sensitive, I believe.

I froze it and it did not look a whole lot different, but my backyard has no snow.

I switched it over to a Vortex. It looks much brighter, but lacks the 2X magnification I liked in the other unit.
