I bought a Holosun for my M&P 15 and it seems to be holding up very well. In fact a fellow shooter bought the same one for his. We are only weekend plinkers having fun with paper and steel so are not demanding to much of them. I chose the Holosun because the store I was at stocked them and not the Vortex otherwise I would've bought the Vortex.

While I fully support spending more on ammo than gear a quality red dot is always preferred. Maybe shoot irons till you can snag a used quality red dot. Aimpoint/Eotech/Trijicon are worth the money. Eotechs battery life is kinda chitty tho. Holographic tho, what do you expect? New ones claim to be mucho better battery life but those won’t go on EE anytime soon. My TRS25 died under heavy recoil. Still haven’t shipped it back for repair. Going on a year now it just sits on my gun bench in its box to be returned. If you must go cheap I’d go vortex as their warranty is apparently the best. I too am drawn by this vortex warranty but have never met anyone with a broken Aimpoint/Trijicon or E I E I O-tech. Spend wisely.

Cabelas has the Vortex SPARC II on sale for $229. Great deal on a solid RDS with VIP Warranty.
That would be my recommendation too. Should be a fair number of them around now and they are a good solid pro quality sight.
