I have never used a red dot sight before, but because aging eyes aren't seeing open sights as well as they once did I think I might try one. I just want it for a 10/22 and plinking. The problem is the prices range from 50$ to $1000. I don't want junk, but I can't justify spending $1000 on a $200 plinker. Can somebody that has used them for this purpose give me some insight please. I have read about Bushnell, Tasco, Aimpoint, Vortex, etc. The problem being that no one locally carries any of them. What would you suggest? I want to spend as little as possible, but could be pushed up to $400 if it was worth it. Thanks.

Hi Jess,

I've got a Aimpoint on my 45-70 Marlin, no problems with it what so ever and love it. Didn't like the price but that's life.

If I was to do it again, I'd go with a UltraDot. www rimfiresports com carried them and ships to Canada. Awesome red dot and it can take a BEATING ! ! !

The main problem with the Bushnell/Tasco red dots seem to be battery life and dot-size.

If you can afford it go Aimpoint it's the best but it will cost you but like I said Ultradot would be my choice now.

Hope that helps,

You should look for a used Comp M2 or C3. Both are quality red dots that will meet your needs within your budget.

Vortex strikefire is very bright, has lifetime warranty and comes with 3x magnifier
Under $200 and holds its own against any aimpoint

Plus one for the ultradot's good quality price and small dot size.
Mausermaniac, the Vortex looks like good value as well. Who has them in stock in Canada?

Italian sporting goods in Vancouver has quite a few of them
They come with a detachable 3x magnifier and your choice of mount, high AR mount to co witness iron sights and standard height (low) for all other applications.
My friend bought one and loves it, it holds zero on slug gun and 444 Marlin
Cant beat their warranty.

Sounds good! There web site says it's a 2X magnifier and a 4moa dot.

I put my aimpoint comp m4 on my 10/22 and what a hoot. Another poster mentioned look for a used aimpoint. I wouldn't go with anything else. you pay but you do get what you pay for you won't regret it. Don't buy a cheapy

What do you consider a cheapy, the Vortex? Also, what size of dot would you recommend for a .22? Wholesale will bring a Vortex in for me to look at, anybody else wants me to put money down before I look.

I have 2 of the Bushnell Trophys on revolvers, work great, multiple reticles. Toss the rings and get some good steel ones.
