Red dot or reflex sight on 3gun rifle?

Hi, planning to get into 3gun soon, I have a Freedom Ordinance FX-9. I was wondering what kind of sights people use on their rifles/PCCs? I am leaning towards a open reflex sight (holosun/vortex) for faster target acquisition, but I've also seen people put a scoped red dot or holographic sight on their rifles too.

Thanks so much!

Lots of options to choose from, do you have any personal experience to work with? What budget are we talking about? There are solid choices starting at about $150 (on sale), and the sky is the limit.

Next, decide if you want magnification, that will help narrow things down.

Lots of red dots and prism sights are being used at the matches I attend. Money and Preferences are the usual deciding factors. If by open reflex sight you mean open emitter pistol slide sized optics like the venom I have not seen them used other than as a secondary side mounted optic.

What do you mean by Scoped Red Dot?

If you mean Lower Powered Variable Optic, I have not seen it done. I’m set up for it with a FFP 1-4x Illuminated LPVO that drops down to a red dot @ 1x and a horse shoe dot @ 4x but have yet to run this set up in a course of fire nor have I seen anyone run anything similar in person.
With the distances most shoot I think a red dot with some hold over will do. I like the LPVO setup the best personally but haven’t given it enough time to decide which is fastest for the game being played. You won’t go wrong with a closed emitter red dot.

I cant see PCC courses of fire including extended distances so that somewhat negates any reason to go with a magnified LPVO type optic, I think a better fit would be a red dot that is faster / easier to pick up.

I say that as a guy who has LPVOs on pretty much all his rifles (dont have a PCC...... yet).

I did a 3 (or 4 if you had PCC) gun match earlier this year and the furthest stage for PCC was 50M.

Hi, yes by open reflex I mean the Vortex venom and such. I feel like the distance that I'm shooting at is close enough so that I don't need magnification. So I don't really need a scoped (like the aimpoint red dots) sight which is slower in acquisition time.

Man, what are you going on about? A 1x red dot is a 1x red dot. The housing itself doesn't affect the speed of target acquisition, what really matters is finding a unit with good optical clarity and a reticle pattern or colour that works best for your eyes. And practice. Lots and lots of practice.

I run DSSMatch.com events in the Lower Mainland. Most of us have migrated to PCCs since the OIC bans; some have gone to 22LR. As a result, our max ranges we design stages for have dropped as the PCCs and 22LRs aren't up to it reliably.

I prefer the open reflex you describe, but go a little bigger than the pistol type sights. I like the Holosun 510C or EoTech as they have a big screen. I find short tubes like the Aimpoints or Vortex SPARC aren't too bad. Our courses of fire often include urban prone and other pretzel-like postures.... As such, I find the eyebox of LPVOs limiting without reward now the ranges are shorter.

Awesome!

I will definitely check out the 510C. I'm based in Vancouver area as well, planning to check out the Abbotsford range next month or so with a friend who goes there.

I have a 8" FX-9, do you think the EOTECH HSS with magnifier will be too bulky for it?
