red dot or variable powered sks?

Photo coming, 5 shots per group, every shot finished in one second, what a pleasure.

Not working?!

I ran into problems with my BC tactical mount and a vortex sparc.
The brass would still bounce off the vortex sparc - I didn't lose zero - but I'm sure if kept it up it would damage the optic.

Is anyone using this set up with compact red dots having any issues with this?

Weaver converta mount and leapesr 4x32 compact scope works for me. Use a coin to just snug the mount screws. Seems to hold zero OK. Allows my tired eyes to hit something meaningfull.

I used a BC Tactical mount to install a TRS-25 red dot. The third shot I fired put an empty case into the rear lens of the sight. It is off being repaired.

I have since cut the rear corner of the ejection port pack and square. Used Dremel and finished with a file. The cases now flip out to the side, not up into the sight.

My 3-9X32 UTG Bugbuster Scope

2"-2 1/4" groups at 100yds. Will consistently ring the 300 yd gong even after lifting scope to clean gun

That's almost exactly what I was thinking for my Coyote gun build, except you had the brains to replace that hex-key cross-bolt with a cotter pin, an idea I will gleefully pilfer from you.

Where did you by that scope jones?

Just in case ljones doesn't get back to this thread I'll mention that I bought one at D&L airgun out of Toronto and it looks like they keep them in stock. My Bugbuster has worked flawlessly on my SKS for over a year despite my best efforts to break it.

I got it from Lever Arms. Seems they don't have them now.

There is a thread around here somewhere where the pin is discussed. Another fellow uses a 6mm bolt. I like this set up because I can remove it with gloves on, no tools needed. If you are only using yours at the range then the bolt will work for you but requires tools. I would not necessarily recommend a cotter pin. It may not be strong enough to withstand the recoil forces of bolt carrier, bolt and spring. I used a spring pin, 1/4" and turned it down on a lathe to exact tolerances as the removed retaining pin.

Want to use it as a 365 truck/snowmo gun. The use case, I don't want to put big $$ into it, because it's going to be heavily abused. I like (ok, love and it will be parted from my Cold Dead Hands) my Tula, too much to abuse it like that. Was going to grab a Chinese SKS on a crate o' deal from Marstar, and been looking at the Wartak rail. But the crosspin bolt that needs hex keys was really turning me off. This is going to be something I'll need to take down in the field, in the snow, in the mud and rain, etc. etc.

I need it to be "minute of coyote" out to 150yds +, and I'm pretty sure I can get that out of most any SKS with Hornady SST, which is both effective and relatively cheap to shoot.

Yah, yah, I should be able to do 150 yards vs. Coyote with open sights, but tell that to my 43 year old eyes.

I'm OCD about build outs. I plan everything in advance, then start buying. My plan was SKS + Wartak + a couple of 5/10 round mags (keep the profile as sleek as possible) + not 100% sure which scope, something ina 2-7x or 3-9x is flavor.

What you built was almost a perfect picture of what I had in mind. Can skip the limbsaver and vented steel handguard though. Nice choice of scope, looks a reasonable price too.

And by cotter pin I meant spring pin, brain fart moment.

I actually purpose built this as a brush gun for wolf, coyote and deer on the West Coast. Would work perfect for your needs too. I have the butt pad not for recoil but for a longer LOP. I an 6'2" with gorilla arms...

I love the scope. It is compact but very accurate. It just feels right, can't explain it. Needed to get separate rings than the ones that came with it as they wouldn't work on the Kwik Rail. May fit the Wartak though.
