I'm thinking of a red dot type scope for an upcoming project. These are new to me and I was looking for some advice.

What is available out there at a decent price ? I know that eotechs and aimpoints are great products but the price is more than I can afford. Is there a Bushnel 3200 level version of a red dot out there ?

BTW it is going on a AR

I hear great things about the Bushnell trs-25. Thinking of trying one myself.

+1 for TRS-25. For $130 or so there isn't anything that can compete with them. Stay away from cheap Chinese red dots. They all look the part but Ive yet to have one that couldn't handle anything more than indoor airgun work. My CZ-858 chewed up an Aimpoint micro clone in 5 minutes, I had an Eotech clone that was too dim to be used outside on the brightest setting with fresh batteries. The adjustments had no resistance and sometimes they even moved the reticle. Most times nothing happened. The aimpioint was barely bright enough for outside use on cloudy days until the first couple of shots and it went so dim I could barely see the dot. Then it started flickering before it just died. To my eyes, the TRS-25 has better glass than my old Vortex StrikeFire. Low light shooting was a lot nicer with better contrast and resolution and no fishbowl effect. Dot brightness ranges from shooting under a full moon without flare to shooting on a sunny day with fresh snow on the ground without washing out. I haven't bought another red dot since :)

I'm probably going to install one on my SKS, and hope it works out well. I hope its not like the one I already have on a .22. At 100 yards the red dot hides the bullseye on me.

I've got a couple of the bushnell "tactical" red dots. They're under $200, good value for the money, no magnification. They are great for close quarters or using a flat shooting round at intermediate ranges. Doesn't come near a Specter DR of course !

I have about 300 rnds so far and still holding strong.

pc9, Can you see the target at 100 yards or is it hidden by the dot. I'm willing to try another scope, but don't really want to buy another one if I can't see where I point it.

Well I am shooting at Bowling pins and I can see them just fine but I am shooting maybe at 70 yards.
The dot doesn't fully cover it.

The TRS has a 3moa dot, smaller than most lower end red dots. You might have trouble picking off golf balls without a 6 o'clock hold but anything bigger is fair game.
