Being new to the shooting scene, I have a question, the first of many. When I receive my PAL I'm considering buying a Ruger MK. III 512. The question is I also want to purchase a Red Dot scope. What is the difference between a $150 to $200 scope from a gun store and a $49.99 Tasco from Canadian Tire. The Tasco has a built in Weaver adaptor, 1x30, 5MOA Dot, and 11 position reostat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Tasco does it's job for the money, it is delicate though and not too bright in open day light. The mounting system leaves a lot to be desired but hey, it's a 50 buck scope. If you want a rugged, precise, non-magnified optic with a coated lens, machined aluminum tube, that's water resistant and will get 5000-50,000 hours of operation from a single battery - go Aimpoint. The popular COMP M2/M3 models go for about $450-550.

I've got a few Millet SP-1's that I like they have a 3moa dot and cost around $150 new.
I've got a Bushnell sportsman that has a 5 moa dot and costs around $90.
I prefer the Millet and the smaller dot but the bushnell works just fine.

If you are on a budget you could look at aimpoint clones that sell for around $100 with mounts.

I've never tried them but lot's of people like Ultra Dot's, they have a lifetime warranty and are reasonalby priced but I'm not sure if anyone carries them in Canada....

rossi, if you're refering to Tasco's BKRD30 Red Dot...I use one on my 14" Fabarm SG when shooting slugs.
It ok (works better than the bead) but you're better off getting a better one if you can afford it.

BTW the BKRD30 is sold at LeBaron's for less than $35.00

I have an Aimpoint CompM3 on my AR, and it rocks my socks off. It does cost a lot as said, but worth it. My buddy has one of those cheap Tasco sights on his AR, and the one he had sucked big time. If you don't want to drop that much coin on an aimpoint which I'm assuming you don't, obviously. Id recommend something in the $150-200 range at least. My 2 cents.
