Red dot topped scope, functional or not?

Howdy folks,

For some odd reason I have it in my head that mounting a reflex sight above a rifle scope might make for the perfect balance of close range sighting and medium-long range flexibility. At the same time I'm skeptical that this is simply going to be extra crap on my rifle that makes me look like a mall ninja and not add a whole lot of value.

Curious if anyone has tried running this before and if so what was their experience?

I've also considered a set of offset BUIS as well, just not sure if they will be sticking out too much and be prone to getting hung up on stuff all the time.

I'd go offset irons before I went with a optic over an optic. The idea of a chin weld just bothers me, and your sight over bore would be stupid, greatly increasing the chance of hitting something you though you were shooting over.

What are you using it for? Hunting? Wouldn't bother for same reason as nobody really uses see through rings anymore. 3gun/competition,the offset sight thing isn't as popular as it used to be as now everyone seems to have went with low power variable scope. But between the red dot over optic like rmr over acog or offset sights I'd rather have offset red dot mainly for the height over bore like cavs42 said.
 
For some uses an offset red dot combined with a longer ranged optic is a really good combination when speed matters. I've tried red dots mounted over a Trijicon and it just doesn't work for me - the chin weld felt terrible and had me hunting for the target in the red dot.

It may work for some but not for me. Canting the rifle seems much quicker and more natural.
 
I haven't "run" with such a combination as I haven't done any 3 gun type shooting (yet?), but am in the process of trying the over vs offset red dot mated to a BDC with target turrets scope. It seems a good combination of red dot for fast acquisition close range needs and a proper scope for longer range precision, either BDC or dial-in.
