Red dot...would you do it again?

I have a Norc shorty with an ARMS 18 and planning on a red dot; this will complement the other rifles (full length with a Leopold scope and another shorty with garand irons)

Before I do this, let me ask the guys who have "dotted" their rifles...what would you do differently if you were going to do another build?

Me, no, unless the intended role of the rifle changed. However it's all about finding one that suits you and does what it's supposed to on your rifle.
My current rifle is a bit of a "general purpose" at 16", and as such a red dot fits the idea quite well. The next rifle/upper on the list is a DMR, and as such a red dot would not really fit the idea, so a scope would be called for.

Red dots look cool and are great for pinging steel on the range at closer ranges, but when it comes to hunting they really, really limit you, especially if you have bad eyesight.

Yes on a short range rig. Not on a mid range unless I coughed up for a flip to side magnifier again.

Yes on my shorty, no on my longy

My 16.25" CQB-16 is in a Blackfeather, it had a Comp M4 on a CASM.
The M4 will sit nice and low as soon as I receive & install a SHG.

My 22" M21A5 EBR will get long range glass, but I'm not exactly sure what that optic will be yet.

I seem to be the only one around here, that runs a low mag. scope on my AR for CQB matches!?......Does anybody else run a scope? I run a Vortex 2x7x32 on top of my DPMS 16 inch upper, Norc lower. I find it works great at short ranges (5 to 20 yards) then when shooting out there (100 to 300 yards) I can turn it up to the 7 power. At the short ranges, Ive always shot with both eyes open, so running my Vortex at 2 power has never been a problem for me. I just shoot it like its a red dot...point and shoot!
Very accurate with it, at all ranges. I shot it for the first time out to 300 yards, (sitting and sandbagged) and it shoots better than I thought it would. 6 to 10 inch groups, using 55 grain factory. Now Its zero'd at 100, but I just "hold over" at the top of the shoulders and center of mass, all day.
Ive shot a red dot, and find that the groups open up alot, at the longer ranges. IMO.

Most of the shooting I do is tac rifle, and 150m or less... My SPARC is great for that! I actually switch to my BUIS for long shots as I find the RDS distracting out past 50...

Tried the reflex sight thing. It was cool, could shoot a small gong out at 200 m with it and a magnifier. Found the optics and magnification level lacking for longer shots. Maybe a 5 or 7 power magnifier would have worked but figure might as well put on a good scope instead. I also found the reticles washed out in bright sunlight. Gonna try a 3x9x40 or a short 4x12x44 scope now with a micro red dot on top for close range hunting out to 75-100 m.
